Its return in 2027 will provide another major promotional opportunity for San Francisco’s tourism industry.

The original Summer of Love took place in 1967, when thousands of young people gathered in San Francisco, particularly around the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood.

The movement became closely associated with music, art, peace, social change and freedom of expression.

Six decades later, its influence remains visible throughout the city’s cultural landscape.

San Francisco Travel President and CEO Anna Marie Presutti explained that the anniversary offers an opportunity to celebrate the city’s creative identity while encouraging international tourism.

According to Presutti, the Summer of Love helped inspire a worldwide cultural movement whose influence continues through San Francisco’s communities, music and artistic traditions.

Spectacular Floral Float to Showcase San Francisco’s Famous Landmarks

The 2027 float will feature an elaborate design created in partnership with Fiesta Productions Inc., which also worked with San Francisco Travel on its previous parade appearance.

Three enormous moving flowers will form a central attraction, bringing movement and visual energy to the display.

A larger-than-life flower child will represent the counterculture movement.

The design will also include a floral interpretation of the Golden Gate Bridge, one of San Francisco’s most recognisable landmarks.

Colourful hearts inspired by the city’s Hearts in San Francisco public art initiative will provide another distinctive feature.

Fresh flowers, natural materials and vivid decorative elements will create a colourful tribute to the city’s cultural heritage.

Fiesta Productions President and Chief Creative Officer Mike Abboud said the design reflects San Francisco’s individuality, creativity and welcoming atmosphere.

Pasadena Rose Parade Offers Global Tourism Exposure

The Rose Parade is among the United States’ best-known New Year’s Day celebrations.

Organised by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the annual event attracts spectators with its elaborate floral floats, marching bands and equestrian displays.

The 2027 edition will follow the theme “Welcome”.

Tournament of Roses President Terry Madigan welcomed San Francisco’s participation, highlighting the connection between the city’s Summer of Love heritage and the parade’s message of acceptance and belonging.

For tourism organisations, the parade provides a prominent platform to present destinations to large television audiences.

San Francisco’s participation will therefore combine cultural storytelling with destination promotion.

The initiative may also encourage travellers to consider the city for future holidays centred on heritage, art and neighbourhood experiences.

Union Square Visitors Invited to Help Create the Float

San Francisco Travel will introduce a public participation programme before the Pasadena celebration.

On 18 and 19 December 2026, residents and visitors will be able to contribute to the float’s decoration during Winter Walk, presented by JPMorganChase, in Union Square.

Participants will help decorate selected components that will later become part of the completed parade float.

The activity will connect the local community with the wider anniversary campaign.

It will also provide visitors with an opportunity to participate directly in the city’s preparations for the national celebration.

Cultural Heritage Tourism Gains New Promotional Opportunity

The Summer of Love anniversary presents San Francisco with an opportunity to promote experiences beyond its traditional sightseeing attractions.

Neighbourhood heritage, live music, public art and historic cultural landmarks could become important elements of visitors’ itineraries.

The parade campaign will introduce these experiences to audiences who may not be familiar with the city’s counterculture history.

By combining a major televised event with community participation, San Francisco Travel is positioning the anniversary as a platform for destination storytelling.
