Thailand attracted more than 20 million visitors in the period of eight months of 2026, thanks to growth in South Korea, Russia and key source markets such as China, Malaysia, and India. There was strong demand in the region and increased connectivity coupled with Thailand’s global draw as a leisure and cultural destination of choice resulted in over THB1 trillion of tourism revenue in this period.
According to tourism data, Thailand welcomed 20.81 million international visitors from 1 January to 29 August 2026, representing a 2.97% decrease year-on-year. The performance highlights the continued strength of Thailand’s position as one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations, even as global tourism flows adjust to new market conditions.
The country generated THB1.007 trillion (approximately US$30 billion) in tourism revenue from international visitors during the period, underlining the crucial role of tourism in supporting Thailand’s economy, local businesses, hospitality sector and employment opportunities.
Thailand’s tourism recovery continued to rely heavily on major Asian source markets, with China remaining the largest contributor to international arrivals. Chinese travellers accounted for 3.52 million visitors during the January–August period, maintaining China’s position as Thailand’s most important overseas tourism market.

Malaysia ranked second with 2.63 million visitors, supported by strong regional connectivity, short-haul travel demand and frequent cross-border movement. India emerged as another major growth market, contributing 1.53 million arrivals as more Indian travellers continued to choose Thailand for leisure holidays, shopping experiences, weddings and business travel.
Russia remained one of Thailand’s strongest long-haul markets, recording 1.18 million visitors, while South Korea contributed 765,842 arrivals, reinforcing the importance of East Asian travellers in Thailand’s tourism landscape.
The diversity of Thailand’s top visitor markets has helped the country maintain resilience despite fluctuations in individual markets. Strong demand from neighbouring countries and large Asian economies continues to balance changes in international travel behaviour.
Thailand recorded 491,456 international visitors during the week of 23–29 August 2026, marking an 11.67% decline compared with the previous week. The slowdown was linked to the seasonal transition period as summer holiday travel began to ease across several important source markets.

Chinese arrivals experienced the sharpest weekly decline among major markets, falling 24.44% week-on-week. The drop reflected the end of peak summer travel demand and changing holiday patterns among Chinese travellers.
However, Malaysia showed a positive trend during the same period, with visitor numbers increasing 18.76% week-on-week. The rise was supported by regional travel demand and upcoming holiday opportunities, including Malaysia’s National Day celebrations, which were expected to encourage additional trips to Thailand.
Tourism officials expect international arrivals to remain relatively stable in the following weeks as the peak summer travel period concludes. While some markets may experience slower demand, regional travel from nearby countries is expected to continue providing support for Thailand’s tourism sector.
Thailand has continued focusing on attracting visitors from a wider range of international markets while strengthening its tourism infrastructure, experiences and destination offerings. The country remains a leading choice for travellers seeking beaches, cultural attractions, wellness experiences, food tourism, luxury resorts and adventure activities.
Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Krabi and other popular destinations continue to attract millions of visitors each year. The expansion of airline connectivity, improved tourism services and growing interest in unique travel experiences have helped Thailand maintain its global appeal.
The country’s tourism sector is also benefiting from increasing demand for longer stays, premium travel experiences and diverse holiday segments. International visitors are increasingly exploring wellness tourism, sustainable travel, local culture and community-based experiences beyond traditional sightseeing.
Thailand welcomed over 20 million international visitors in the first eight months of 2026, with South Korea, Russia and other key source markets driving tourism growth through strong travel demand and connectivity.
The resilience of Thailand’s tourism sector remains in 2026 with more than 20 million international visits within the first 8 months of the year. The demand for visitors and tourism earnings is sustained by key markets such as South Korea, Russia, China, Malaysia and India. Due to flexible travel patterns, Thailand’s tourism attractiveness and improved connectivity will reinforce Thailand’s position as a premier tourism destination in Southeast Asia with its diverse attractions.
