This summer, there will be a slightly different itinerary for Royal Caribbean International’s Legend of the Seas, highlighting Italy’s coastal charm and the timeless Western Mediterranean. There is exciting news for travelers embarking this summer for the ship’s first European season! As of this announcement, there is a port of call scheduled for La Spezia, Italy, instead of Alicante, Spain, for the cruise departing July 25, 2026. Though itinerary changes create some ambiguity for cruise guests, this schedule opens an enchanting port for travelers, bringing them closer to historic scenic landscapes of Florence, Pisa, and the Ligurian.

This Legend of the Seas cruise will be Royal Caribbean’s first Icon-class ship to set sail for an eight-night Western Mediterranean voyage, currently under construction in Finland. Royal Caribbean recently confirmed that a call to La Spezia has replaced the port of call to Alicante, Spain.

According to the cruise line, itinerary changes were necessary due to operational reviews and scheduling changes for the ship’s first deployment. The cruise line also stated, although indirectly, that changes to logistics and operations for the scheduled port calls may require itinerary changes. The cruise line representatives assured that the changes to the schedule were made in the best interest of the guests and were intended to provide guests with an improved overall experience and a greater opportunity to explore each of the itinerary ports.

The adjustments include a change to arrival and departure times to accommodate other stops in the Mediterranean, in addition to the relocation of the port of call.

La Spezia Has Become an Important Port-of-Call

La Spezia has become one of the more significant ports of call in Italy to access the internationally known art cities of Tuscany. Being in the Liguria region, La Spezia is a launching point for cruises to the cities of Florence and Pisa, which are also reported by Italian Cruise Traffic to be among the most popular cities in Italy.

La Spezia cruise tourists book organized coach tours to the historic Florence Renaissance sites of museums, cathedrals, and piazzas. Pisa, internationally recognized for the Leaning Tower, also serves a great number of day cruise tourists from Mediterranean ports.

In addition to the mentioned popular routes, La Spezia also offers visitors its own seafront walks and piazzas, along with historic buildings, local seafood, and access by rail to the Cinque Terre, which has a growing popularity among international visitors.

Italy’s Liguria region is promoted by cruise tourism “insiders” for all of its natural advantages and a direct option to the central hubs of the country.

Tender Operations for Guests

Royal Caribbean also shared with guests that for ships visiting La Spezia, guests would be taken ashore via tender and the ships would not be docking at the cruise-ship pier.

The company stated that assistance would be available for guests using collapsible wheelchairs who are able to manage a few steps on their own. However, those reliant on wheelchairs or larger mobility scooters may find it difficult to go ashore.

With limited options for docking, accessibility arrangements at tender ports of call remain an important consideration. This is particularly the case for historic Mediterranean destinations.

Mobility-impaired guests who plan to go on excursions that include tender transportation are advised to check the services offered prior to making a booking.

Strategically Significant Cruise Markets

With a significant share of Europe’s tourism, the Western Mediterranean is likely to be the focus of the revised route. Italian and Spanish tourism agencies note the positive economic outcome of cruise travel to port cities. These agencies report that they are making efforts to sign more cruise companies.

With a 2024 focus on post-COVID Mediterranean travel, Royal Caribbean has added the Western Mediterranean to its routes. The revisions port the Legend of the Seas at Palma, Málaga, Civitavecchia, and Napoli.

Construction Continues at Meyer Turku Shipyard

The Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland is constructing The Legend of the Seas. Meyer Turku is a construction facility that is a part of Royal Caribbean’s infusion of smaller, liquefied natural gas-powered ships. The Legend of the Seas is the third of its class and has facilities to accommodate cruise line construction for many years to come in the shipyard.

Slowly but surely, moving to liquefied natural gas propulsion is the cruise line’s strategy for fuel efficiency. Environmental regulations that are placed internationally to cover the cruise line industry are changing as the construction of ships that comply with these regulations is inevitable. These types of propulsion systems relate the nature of cruise line construction to family fun in an entertainment sense. The Icon class has proved to be very effective in cruise line construction with the layouts of family-oriented systems and the construction of environmentally sustainable propulsion.

The Legend of the Seas is the first ship to dry dock in this class and will be providing Mediterranean cruises in the late summer of 2026.

Europe Season before Caribbean Deployment

Switching ports is normal in the cruise line industry, with one summer port in the Mediterranean and then a winter port in the Caribbean. This is becoming more of a norm in the industry, but the cruise line traffic is growing, and the need for construction facilities is becoming great. Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, year after year, and a main reason why Royal Caribbean launched the ship from Europe.

Mediterranean Travelers Adapt

For guests booked on the Legend of the Seas, the altered itinerary may not be a source of disappointment and may offer a different view on Mediterranean travel. While the beauty of the coast of Alicante will not be included on this trip, La Spezia gives guests their first look at the phenomenon of the Southern coastline of Europe, with its dramatic coast and Renaissance and Italian splendor.

As the Legend of the Seas readies for its inaugural season at sea, the changed itinerary gives insight into how travel is always in a state of flux, even before the journey begins. Sometimes, the unexpected changes are the experiences that participants will remember most.
