The first Iberia aircraft fitted with complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi took off last night from Madrid-Barajas Airport, marking a major step in the airline’s digital upgrade. The aircraft, registered EC-MAA and operating a route to São Paulo, is the first in the fleet to be equipped with Starlink’s next-generation connectivity system, enabling passengers to access fast internet services almost anywhere across the globe.

With this rollout, Iberia becomes the first airline in Spain to deploy SpaceX-developed satellite connectivity onboard its aircraft. The system relies on a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites, delivering stronger stability and faster performance compared to conventional airborne internet solutions. It is also engineered to support multiple users and devices at the same time, ensuring consistent connectivity throughout the cabin.

The service will be offered at no additional cost across all travel classes, including Economy, Premium Economy, and Business. Passengers will be able to experience speeds of up to 500 Mbps, supporting data-heavy activities such as live streaming, video conferencing, online gaming, continuous web browsing, and remote working. The connectivity extends throughout the entire journey, from boarding to arrival, providing a seamless “gate-to-gate” digital experience designed to replicate ground-level internet quality in the air.

“We are delighted to become the first Spanish airline to offer the fastest onboard internet connection currently available on the market. We know that staying connected gate-to-gate is very important for our customers, whether they are travelling for business or leisure, and, thanks to this new service, we will significantly enhance their onboard experience. Furthermore, this project reflects our commitment to innovation and digitalisation, two key pillars of Flight Plan 2030,” said Beatriz Guillén, Iberia’s Director of Customer Experience.

The aviation industry is undergoing a rapid digital shift, and Iberia is positioning itself at the centre of this transformation through a major technological and operational overhaul. A strategic collaboration established in November between IAG, the airline’s parent company, and Starlink, the advanced satellite network operated by SpaceX, has become a defining milestone in Iberia’s push toward next-generation connectivity and intelligent airline operations.

This partnership introduces advanced in-flight internet capabilities powered by a low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated systems currently deployed in global aviation communications. The integration of this technology is expected to significantly enhance connectivity standards onboard Iberia flights, offering passengers a faster, more stable, and more seamless digital experience while cruising at high altitude over long-haul and short-haul routes alike.

Unlike traditional airborne connectivity systems that rely heavily on ground-based towers or limited geostationary satellites, low-Earth orbit networks provide lower latency and stronger global coverage. This means passengers can expect smoother video streaming, uninterrupted communication services, and improved access to digital tools even in remote air corridors. For Iberia, this development marks a substantial leap in its ability to compete in an increasingly tech-driven airline market.

At the core of this transformation is Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030 strategy, a long-term roadmap designed to modernise operations, improve customer satisfaction, and embed digital innovation across all layers of the airline’s structure. The introduction of Starlink-powered connectivity is not an isolated upgrade but part of a broader system-wide shift toward digitisation and smarter aviation infrastructure.

The airline is using this opportunity to reinforce its commitment to delivering a more personalised and efficient travel experience. Enhanced onboard connectivity is expected to support a range of passenger needs, from business travellers requiring stable internet access for real-time work to leisure passengers seeking entertainment and communication throughout their journey. This aligns with Iberia’s ambition to redefine the in-flight experience through technology-led innovation.

Beyond connectivity improvements, Iberia is also advancing a significant €6 billion investment programme aimed at reshaping the airline’s operational and customer-facing ecosystem. This large-scale financial commitment is strategically distributed across several core areas that are critical to long-term competitiveness and sustainability in the global aviation sector.

One of the primary focus areas of this investment is customer experience enhancement. Iberia is working to streamline digital booking systems, improve airport service integration, and offer more seamless travel journeys from check-in to arrival. The goal is to create a unified digital ecosystem where passengers can manage their entire travel experience with minimal friction.

Artificial intelligence is another major pillar of the investment strategy. Iberia is accelerating the deployment of AI-driven tools across multiple functions, including predictive maintenance, demand forecasting, crew optimisation, and personalised customer engagement. These systems are expected to improve operational efficiency while reducing costs and enhancing decision-making accuracy across the airline.

Fleet modernisation also remains a central component of the €6 billion plan. Iberia continues to invest in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft designed to reduce emissions and improve overall performance. This aligns with broader industry trends toward sustainability and environmental responsibility, as airlines worldwide face increasing pressure to decarbonise operations.

In parallel, Iberia is developing Ciudad Iberia, an ambitious aviation innovation hub that aims to become a central node for research, development, and technological experimentation within the airline group. This facility is expected to bring together engineers, data scientists, and aviation experts to collaborate on future-focused solutions, including advanced aircraft systems, digital aviation tools, and next-generation passenger services.

Ciudad Iberia represents more than just infrastructure development; it is intended to serve as a strategic innovation ecosystem that supports long-term competitiveness and positions Iberia as a leader in aviation technology across Europe and beyond.

Together, these initiatives reflect a clear and structured transformation agenda. By combining advanced satellite connectivity, large-scale financial investment, artificial intelligence integration, and innovation-driven infrastructure development, Iberia is building a future-ready airline model.

As global aviation continues to evolve rapidly, Iberia’s multi-layered strategy highlights its intent to remain competitive in a highly dynamic market. The integration of Starlink technology and the execution of its Flight Plan 2030 signal a decisive shift toward a smarter, more connected, and digitally advanced airline ecosystem.
