Scandic has entered into a long-term agreement with the developer SRV to launch a new Scandic Go hotel featuring 144 rooms in Oulu, Finland. Slated to open in the latter half of 2025, this hotel will occupy a prime location in Oulu, the largest city in northern Finland, positioning it at the heart of the city’s central area.

This upcoming Scandic Go in Oulu boasts a prime downtown location, offering guests immediate access to the main square, the historic market hall, and numerous sought-after dining and shopping venues. Oulu, known as northern Finland’s premier city, serves as a center for technology, science, and education, attracting both domestic and international business visitors. The area’s hotel sector is buoyed by leisure travelers drawn to its outdoor pursuits, festivals, and cultural events, especially in the summer. Additionally, interest in the Northern Lights and mountain sports has significantly increased, making Oulu an appealing destination throughout the year.

It’s gratifying that we’re continuing to expand Scandic Go to key destinations where we see growth opportunities and increasing demand from business and leisure travelers. The hotel’s strategic location in the city center complements our existing portfolio and addresses the lack of hotels in the economy segment in the region, says Jens Mathiesen, President & CEO of Scandic Hotels Group.

The economy hotel sector has seen rapid growth, expected to continue, propelled by changing travel habits and new economic realities facing travelers. Scandic Go aims to attract guests with its competitive pricing, inviting design, efficient self-service, and 24/7 dining options.

Oulu is the lifeblood for business and tourism in the region. The establishment is in line with our growth strategy in Finland, and by launching this new Scandic Go, we will strengthen our position in the region. We can also leverage market trends and fill a gap in a rapidly growing market. Together with SRV, we’re creating greater incentives to visit and explore northern Finland, says Laura Tarkka, Country Managing Director, Finland at Scandic Hotels.

The property is designed with the goal of achieving LEED Platinum certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainability through various aspects like biodiversity, water and energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. Post-launch, it will also receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, underscoring its eco-friendly credentials.

Together with Scandic, we are responding to the demand of Oulu’s hotel market by developing the building into a central and important center for supporting tourism and business life. We are aiming that the hotel will be ready for Oulu’s big events, such as the European Capital of Culture, says Hannu Lokka, Director of strategic project development of SRV.

With the opening of Scandic Go, Scandic’s footprint in Oulu’s hotel scene will expand to three hotels, totaling 565 rooms, further cementing its market presence.
