Delhi’s Airport boosts operations with the newly refurbished RW 10/28 runway, enhancing capacity and passenger experience.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) announced the reopening of the newly refurbished RW 10/28 runway, starting operations on Saturday.

In an official release, the airport authority shared that the renovation and re-carpeting efforts for RW 10/28, also referred to as the second runway, are now complete, with the runway being returned to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) for active use.

At the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the largest of its kind in India, there are now four runways ready for use: RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28, and RW 11L/29R.

Previously, Delhi’s airport faced operational challenges due to having only one runway equipped with CAT III technology, essential for low-visibility conditions. This limitation was highlighted when the runway closed temporarily on January 14, amid dense fog, causing widespread disruption and inconvenience for travelers.

Following the G20 Summit in mid-September 2023, DIAL initiated essential re-carpeting tasks on the 3,813-meter long and 45-meter wide second runway. The project concluded in December 2023, with subsequent enhancements to the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system, as reported by PTI citing DIAL’s statement.

With the completion of these upgrades, DIAL anticipates the Delhi airport will now operate at full capacity, with its three terminals managing up to 100 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA). Additionally, the airport’s capacity on the airside is expected to rise, allowing for the accommodation of 140 MPPA, according to the announcement.

DIAL also highlighted that the upgrade of RW 10/28 is aimed at enriching the passenger experience by adding several new taxiways among other improvements.

Echoing this development, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, in a recent X post, celebrated the operationalization of the CAT III-equipped Runway 10/28 at Delhi Airport, noting it as a step forward in reducing weather-related disruptions.
