Singapore will see twice as many visitors in 2023

In 2023, the number of international tourists visiting Singapore more than doubled, reaching 13.6 million compared to the 6.3 million recorded in 2022. The Singapore Tourism Board, aligning with its projections, highlighted that this figure represented 71% of the 2019 levels, which was the last full year before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to STB data, Indonesia led the pack with the highest number of tourists to Singapore at 2.3 million, followed by China and Malaysia at 1.4 million and 1.1 million, respectively. The tourism board also noted the strong recovery of other key markets, including Australia, South Korea, and the USA.

Notably, visitors extended their stays in Singapore compared to pre-pandemic times. The average length of stay in 2023 was approximately 3.8 days, an increase from 3.4 days during the same period in 2019.

Melissa Ow, the Chief Executive of STB, expressed optimism about the robust performance in 2023, indicating a promising recovery for tourism. She attributed this recovery to the growing flight capacity and increased demand for international travel.

Tourism receipts for 2023 are estimated to range between 24.5 billion to 26 billion Singapore dollars ($18.28 billion to $19.4 billion), surpassing STB’s earlier forecast of SG$18 billion to SG$21 billion for the year. Notably, from January to September the previous year, tourism receipts across various spending categories either exceeded or approached pre-pandemic levels compared to the same period in 2019.

Looking ahead, STB anticipates a continued recovery in the tourism sector, driven by improved global flight connectivity and capacity, as well as the implementation of a mutual 30-day visa-free travel arrangement between China and Singapore. The tourism board projects that international visitor arrivals to Singapore will reach approximately 15 to 16 million, contributing an estimated SG$26 billion to SG$27.5 billion in tourism receipts.
