The Caribbean is set to become the ultimate cruise destination for Spanish travellers in 2025, surpassing other popular routes such as Alaska, the United Arab Emirates and the Red Sea, according to a government-backed tourism report.

The findings, published on the official government tourism portal, reveal a rising trend among Spaniards favoring cruises as their preferred holiday choice.

The study, titled “III X-ray of the Current Traveler: Preferences and Their Relationship with MSC Cruises,” highlights that a growing 77.7% of young Spaniards (ages 25-39) express strong interest in Caribbean cruises, with significant demand also observed in La Rioja (77.8%), Castilla-La Mancha (76.1%), and Cantabria.

The Rise of the Caribbean as Spain’s Dream Cruise Destination

While the Mediterranean remained the top choice for Spanish cruise-goers in 2024 (68.2%), the allure of the Caribbean is stronger than ever.

Over two-thirds (68.1%) of respondents cited the appeal of visiting multiple tropical destinations in one trip as the key factor influencing their preference.

The most sought-after Caribbean locations include:

  • Mexico (34.3%)
  • The Bahamas (32.6%) – home to the exclusive Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve
  • The Dominican Republic (31.9%)

To cater to this increasing demand, MSC Cruises has introduced an all-inclusive travel package that includes flights from Madrid or Barcelona, a Miami hotel stay (1-4 nights) before departure, and a week-long cruise through the Caribbean.

Economic and Organizational Barriers Affect Cruise Bookings

Despite the growing interest, the report notes a rise in holiday procrastination, with 45.7% of respondents delaying trips due to financial constraints (29.9%) and scheduling difficulties (27.5%).

However, Spanish travelers are still committed to cruising, with first-time cruise experiences typically occurring before age 50.

The 36-50 age group (30.6%) and 26-35 age group (29.4%) represent the majority of first-time cruise-goers.

Cruise Travel Patterns: Peak Seasons and Spending Trends

Spring remains the most popular season for a Caribbean cruise (35.2%), while low-season travel (34%) is gaining traction due to cost savings and flexibility.

Additionally, Spanish cruise passengers contribute significantly to local economies during their stopovers. According to the government study:

  • 41% of Spanish travelers spend between €50 and €100 in local businesses per stopover
  • 27.8% spend between €10 and €50
  • 20% spend between €100 and €500

This positive economic impact reinforces the role of cruise tourism in supporting Caribbean tourism-dependent communities.

Nearly 86% of travelers plan to book another cruise in 2025, up from 80% in 2024. While multi-destination travel remains the top draw, other factors like onboard experiences (10%) and diverse amenities (9.9%) are gaining popularity.

MSC Cruises continues to refine its offerings, incorporating themed restaurants, spas, leisure activities, and sports facilities such as gyms and volleyball courts to enhance the experience.

Cruise Boom: A Bright Future for Spain’s Travel Market

Spain’s cruise market is dominated by travelers from Andalusia (26.7%), Catalonia (26.3%), and Madrid (25.3%), with these regions leading in cruise participation.

Meanwhile, Galicia (14.4%), Cantabria (16.7%), and Castile and León (17.8%) report lower cruise engagement.

With increased accessibility, flexible packages, and growing interest, 2025 is set to be a record-breaking year for Spanish cruise tourism.

The government-backed report affirms Spain’s position as a key player in the global cruise industry, ensuring seamless access to dream destinations for travelers across the country.
