Sri Lanka is taking bold steps to rejuvenate its struggling tourism industry by reintroducing its online visa application platform, following the suspension of a controversial outsourcing deal with VFS Global, an India-based consortium. This decision, announced by Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is part of a broader plan to streamline tourist entry and stimulate the nation’s economy.

The outsourcing agreement, previously halted due to transparency concerns, was under scrutiny for potentially generating up to $2.75 billion over 16 years. In response, Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court intervened, ordering a return to the original online visa platform. Tourists can now apply for visas without the previously imposed $25 fee, a move warmly welcomed by industry experts.

In addition to reintroducing the online visa system, the government has launched a visa-free initiative for citizens of 35 countries, including India, set to take effect on October 1. The six-month initiative is designed to increase the number of tourists visiting the island nation. The 35 countries included in the proposal are Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Tourism Ministry adviser Harin Fernando emphasized that these efforts aim to showcase Sri Lanka’s stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and pristine beaches to more global travelers.

Sri Lanka has made impressive strides in attracting international tourists, welcoming 1,487,303 visitors in 2023, achieving a remarkable growth rate of 106.6%. In August 2024 alone, the country welcomed 164,609 tourists, compared to 136,405 in August 2023, further demonstrating its positive momentum.

With these reforms, Sri Lanka is positioning itself as a tourist-friendly destination, committed to making travel more accessible and appealing to international visitors, while addressing previous concerns around the visa application process.
