SriLankan Airlines adds new Airbus A320 to expand fleet

SriLankan Airlines boosts its fleet with a new Airbus A320, ready for service and enhancing route capacity in the Indian subcontinent.

SriLankan Airlines has recently expanded its fleet with the addition of a new Airbus A320, identified by the serial number 4R – ABS. This aircraft, leased for a period of six years, was recently flown in from Malaysia and reached Colombo on the evening of December 21, 2023. After undergoing necessary customizations and branding, the plane is set to commence service, with its first flight scheduled for December 29, 2023, destined for the Maldives.

This latest addition is notable for its advanced Sharklet wingtips, which are designed to minimize drag and enhance fuel efficiency. The A320 will mainly serve short to medium-range destinations, focusing on areas within the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and the Far East. It offers a dual-class configuration, including 12 seats in Business Class and 138 in Economy, thereby increasing SriLankan Airlines’ capacity on these routes.

With this new aircraft, SriLankan Airlines’ fleet now includes 12 narrow-body and 10 wide-body aircraft. The airline industry, including SriLankan Airlines, has faced several challenges this year, including aircraft and engine shortages and extended maintenance durations due to supply chain disruptions. These issues have led to a reduction in flight availability. However, the inclusion of 4R – ABS marks the beginning of a fleet expansion for SriLankan Airlines. By early January 2024, the airline anticipates the addition of three more aircraft, including a wet-leased A330 and two additional engines. Furthermore, another aircraft similar to 4R – ABS is expected to join the fleet in March 2024.

SriLankan Airlines currently operates direct flights to 36 cities across 21 countries and is a member of the oneworld Alliance.
