Switzerland’s tourism industry achieved an unprecedented milestone in 2024, recording 42.8 million overnight stays—a remarkable 2.6% rise from the previous year. This surge solidifies the country’s growing reputation as a premier travel destination, surpassing all previous records.

International Visitors Drive Growth

The latest data highlights the vital role of foreign travelers in Switzerland’s tourism boom, with international overnight stays climbing 5.1% to reach 22 million—its highest level in more than five decades. Among these, visitors from North America played a crucial part, leading the rise in demand and significantly boosting the country’s hospitality sector.

December stood out as an exceptional month, witnessing a 10.7% increase in foreign stays. Throughout 2024, demand remained consistently strong, with only two months—April and September—registering slight declines.

Asia’s Comeback and Europe’s Steady Growth

While North American travelers led the momentum, Switzerland also saw a resurgence in tourism from Asia. Visitors from key markets in the region drove substantial growth, although overall numbers remained below pre-pandemic figures. Despite this, demand from the region shows strong signs of recovery, indicating a positive trajectory for the years ahead.

Meanwhile, European tourism remained stable, contributing 12.2 million overnight stays, reflecting a gradual return to pre-pandemic levels. Several markets saw noticeable gains, helping to maintain Switzerland’s position as a top European destination.

Urban Centers See Strong Demand

Among Switzerland’s 13 major tourist regions, nine recorded positive growth, with the highest increases seen in Zurich and Geneva. These vibrant cities benefitted from a mix of business and leisure travelers, as well as international events that fueled higher occupancy rates.

Nationwide, the room occupancy rate reached 55.1% in 2024—just shy of the all-time peak recorded in 2019. Other regions, including the Basel area and central Switzerland, also saw an uptick in occupancy, highlighting the country’s appeal beyond its traditional alpine destinations.

A Promising Future for Swiss Tourism

Switzerland’s tourism industry is experiencing a golden era, with record-breaking numbers reflecting its strong global appeal. A growing interest in outdoor adventures, luxury hospitality, and winter sports has positioned the country for continued success.

With international travel demand on the rise and key markets showing resilience, all signs point toward another strong year ahead. Could 2025 set yet another record for Switzerland’s booming tourism sector? Only time will tell.
