The residents of Tanzania have been encouraged to explore numerous tourism spots in the country, including Saanane Island National Park by Commissioner Benedict Wakulyamba, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

Commissioner Wakulyamba, who was recently appointed to the position, made the announcement while touring the intriguing park in Lake Victoria as part of his familiarisation working visit.

He urged park officials to work with other stakeholders, including people, to enhance visitor numbers by promoting local tourism and enhancing income collection from the park in return.

In response to the visit, Dr Isaac Safari of the Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) congratulated Mr Wakulyamba for setting a good example for other residents to follow.

He described the move as a broad market strategy for many stakeholders, including residents, aimed at increasing interest in visiting local tourism destinations.

Meanwhile, Ms Annamaria Makweba, an Arusha-based local visitor who has been exploring several national parks in the country, has visited three parks this year alone, including Tarangire National Park and Arusha National Park.

She told the ‘Sunday News’ that she is determined to see the national beauty on her own. She asked locals to be proud of the country’s tourism attractions by visiting them for refreshment and snapping photographs to attract more visitors. She also urged the government, as well as other tourism stakeholders, to educate residents about the value of tourism.

Saanane Island is East Africa’s smallest national park, located in the Mwanza area of the Gulf of Lake Victoria. Mammals such as the impala, rock hyrax, and velvet monkeys may be seen in the park.
