Thailand celebrates a record-breaking 35 million tourists in 2024, setting the stage for an exciting and transformative Grand Tourism and Sports Year in 2025.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrates a major milestone as international tourist arrivals in 2024 exceed 35 million, generating an impressive 1.8 trillion Baht in revenue. This achievement marks Thailand’s robust tourism recovery and lays the groundwork for 2025, designated as the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year.’

With an ambitious goal of welcoming 36 to 39 million international visitors and generating between 1.98 and 2.23 trillion Baht in revenue, Thailand is gearing up to solidify its reputation as a leading global tourism hub, offering unmatched experiences and championing sustainable growth.

2024: A Year of Remarkable Recovery

TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributes this success to strategic policies that enhanced Thailand’s global appeal. By 27 December 2024, Thailand had welcomed 35,047,501 visitors, surpassing its annual target.

Key initiatives driving this success included visa exemptions for citizens of 93 countries—allowing 60-day stays—and the removal of TM.6 immigration forms at 16 key border points, streamlining entry procedures. These measures greatly improved travel convenience, attracting more tourists worldwide.

The aviation sector also played a pivotal role, with airlines reintroducing routes and launching new ones from major and secondary cities globally. The increased airline seat capacity reached 47 million in 2024, a 26% rise from 2023. During the December peak season alone, over 311 additional flights added more than 70,000 seats to Thailand’s network.

Major festivals and events like the Amazing Thailand Countdown 2024, the Maha Songkran World Water Festival, and international concerts featuring global stars further boosted Thailand’s allure. Iconic locations showcased in films, TV shows, and music videos also attracted a wide range of travelers.

Enhanced Connectivity: A Key Driver

Thailand’s improved air connectivity for the high season played a crucial role in attracting visitors from both short-haul and long-haul markets.

  • South Asia: AirAsia and IndiGo expanded services, while Thai Lion Air added multiple connections between Indian cities and Bangkok.
  • Oceania: JetStar and Thai AirAsia boosted connectivity with cities like Sydney and Brisbane.

Long-haul routes featured:

  • Europe: New routes from British Airways (London-Bangkok) and Edelweiss (Zurich-Phuket) complemented charter services from TUI and TUIfly Nordic.
  • North America: Air Canada added a Vancouver-Bangkok connection.
  • Middle East: Saudia Airlines launched new routes to Phuket.

Vision for 2025: Building on Momentum

As Thailand enters the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025,’ TAT plans to capitalize on its 2024 success with focused strategies:

  • Organizing global-scale events and festivals.
  • Highlighting Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and traditions.
  • Streamlining travel processes and introducing exclusive visitor perks.
  • Collaborating with influencers to amplify Thailand’s global visibility.

Thailand’s relentless focus on offering extraordinary experiences and fostering sustainable tourism ensures its continued rise as a premier destination for travelers worldwide.

With these efforts, 2025 promises to be a landmark year for Thai tourism, solidifying the nation’s status as a vibrant and welcoming hub for global explorers.
