In line with its ‘Reborn the Nature’ project and to drive forward its promotion of responsible tourism and meaningful travel experiences, The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in cooperation with the Ko Tao Tourism Association organised the ‘Spotlight Ko Tao 2023’ fam trip to Ko Tao in Surat Thani province from 7-9 April 2023.

Tanes Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific, said, “With the Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters campaign, TAT aims to offer visitors from around the world experience-based tourism that will make Thailand stand apart as a sustainable tourism destination, including in the Asian and South Pacific markets. The ‘Reborn the Nature’ project promotes responsible tourism trends under the concept of the Bio-Circular-Green or BCG Economic Model.”

The aim of the Spotlight Ko Tao 2023 fam trip was to raise awareness among the targeted Millennials sector, Voluntourism sector, divers, and groups of tourists who value environmental responsibility. This which would lead to travel package sales that would generate local income and help revitalise the Thai economy.

68 KOLs, journalists and entrepreneurs, and representatives of Asia and South Pacific travel firms with a focus on developing responsible tourism trends took part in the trip.

The fam trip itinerary included a variety of conservation activities for participants. Coral restoration, mooring buoy repairs, marine garbage collection, coral surveys, creating fish houses, and tree planting were all part of the project. Participants also tried their hand at manufacturing of ‘Sea Glass’ jewellery out of bottle trash and broken glass, ‘CoCo Tie Dye Ko Tao’ fabric out of coconut husks, ‘ECO PRINT’ fabric with leaves, and ‘Plas-Tao’ by recycling plastic waste.

Additional highlights of the vacation were visiting the Ko Tao Green Market, the Mini Dive & Adventure Expo, participating in island-style sports, and sampling the great local cuisine.

TAT also hosted a networking lunch on April 7 for fam trip participants to learn about tourist goods and services on Island Tao, Ko Samui, and Ko Pha-ngan.

Surat Thani province, which includes Ko Tao, is a world-renowned location for individuals interested in learning to dive, and it aspires to be a socially and ecologically responsible tourist destination via tourism management, conservation, and nature restoration efforts.

Almost 129,000 people visited Ko Tao in the first three months of 2023.
