Tourism initiated 2.3 billion euros in revenue

In spite of the rise, still the numbers are quite low compared to the ones observed in 2019 with record numbers of 27 million tourists, as per the available data from the National Statistics Institute. The sector, in terms of revenue, attained 2.3 billion euros. It was around 61% more than in 2020.


The INE said that last year also had the impacts of the constraints occurring due to COVID-19, particularly the first half lockdowns, with negative impacts on tourism which, in spite of getting increased compared to 2020, was still below the 2019 level.


For 2021, almost 16 million guests were estimated, and 9.6 million were foreign tourists. Compared to 2020, it’s a rise of 48.4% but 39% below 2019, almost 24.6 million were foreigners. Spain dominated as the main outbound market with 30.2% share. It registered a rise of 57.3%, followed by the French market with 16.1%, British 10.6% and German 8% respectively.


In 2021, when it comes to overnight stays, there were 42.6 million recorded. It was an increase of 40.7% in comparison to the year before i.e. 2020, however, the INE says that a decrease of 45.2% compared to 2019. Around 22.5 million overnight stays were offered by the domestic market while overnight stays from international tourists totaled to almost 20.1 million. In different regions, an increase in the number of overnight stays, most notably in the Azores (+125.7%) and Madeira (+80%).
