Trade bodies in West Bengal are urging for relaxation of the partial lockdown measures brought in by the government on the job-intensive tourism sector.

The travel restriction announced by the Mamata Banerjee government for limiting the spread of the disease in the state has severely impacted the state’s tourism industry.

This is the season when there’s a high flow of visitors to the mountains in north Bengal, the Sundarbans, Santiniketan, in the sea resorts of Digha and Mandarmani and other tourist destinations in West Bengal. The restrictions have pushed the tourism sector to the wall again, which was recovering gradually.

The Travel Agents Association of Bengal (TAAB) said that the government must take the reopening the sector into consideration with detailed safety protocols and appoint a committee with representatives from the government, trade bodies and other stakeholders for its enforcement.

The Association of Tourism Service Providers in Bengal (ATSPB) held a demonstration last week in front of Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and appealed to the state government for the same “leeway” for the travel sector as given to malls, restaurants, salons and theaters.

The demonstrators had placards with slogans, ‘Save Tourism, Save Lives’ and ‘Save Tourism, Save Bengal’.
