Madrid puts F1 and football at the centre of sports tourism

Madrid is entering a new era of sports tourism with the arrival of Formula 1 and soccer tourism in the Spanish capital, which has made Madrid a destination with two huge sporting magnets. The opening of the MADRING circuit at IFEMA Madrid brought the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix back to Madrid, and the Santiago Bernabéu continues to merge soccer games of Real Madrid with an advanced stadium tourism offer. The consequence of this has been a sports schedule that makes tourists stay in Madrid longer by going from one sports venue to another.

MADRING Puts Madrid Back on the F1 Map

The September 11–13 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix marked Madrid’s return to the F1 calendar after a 45-year absence. The new 5.4-kilometre MADRING circuit, located around the IFEMA Madrid and Valdebebas area, features 22 corners and combines permanent sections with public-road elements.

The debut generated substantial visitor demand. All general admission tickets were sold out, while organisers reported 352,618 cumulative attendances across the first edition. The scale of the event placed Madrid firmly on the international motorsport travel map.

For visitors, MADRING also created a relatively accessible race-weekend proposition. The circuit sits close to Madrid-Barajas Airport and the IFEMA exhibition complex, allowing international travellers to combine a Formula 1 weekend with a conventional city break.

Public Transport Becomes Part of the Race Experience

Madrid’s transport infrastructure was placed under additional pressure during the Grand Prix, with the city introducing a dedicated mobility plan covering Metro, Cercanías, buses, taxis and event shuttle services.

Metro Line 8 was reinforced during the event, linking central Madrid, the airport and the IFEMA area. Feria de Madrid station provides direct access to the southern side of the exhibition complex, while Valdebebas station on the Cercanías network serves the northern side of the circuit.

The city also increased rail capacity during peak periods, creating a practical alternative to private vehicles. According to the organisers, eight out of ten spectators used public transport during the event, highlighting how rail and metro connectivity can shape the visitor experience around large-scale sporting events.

For international travellers arriving by air or connecting through Madrid’s wider rail network, this creates an easier foundation for building multi-day itineraries around the race.

Hospitality Adds a Premium Layer

MADRING’s appeal extends beyond grandstand viewing. Official hospitality areas include premium lounges, suites, dining and entertainment spaces designed around the race weekend.

This creates additional opportunities for Madrid’s luxury tourism ecosystem, particularly hotels, restaurants, private transfers and corporate travel providers. The circuit’s proximity to IFEMA also gives the event a natural connection with Madrid’s established business-events infrastructure.

The wider IFEMA complex is already one of Spain’s major international exhibition hubs, and the arrival of Formula 1 adds another high-profile event to an already busy calendar.

Bernabéu Becomes More Than a Football Stadium

While MADRING has created a new reason to travel to Madrid, the Santiago Bernabéu remains the city’s established sports tourism anchor.

Real Madrid’s renovated stadium combines matchday demand with a permanent visitor experience. The Tour Bernabéu includes the Real Madrid Museum, panoramic stadium views, changing rooms, dugouts and interactive audiovisual content, allowing visitors to experience the venue even when there is no match.

The stadium has also added new immersive elements. Bernabéu Infinito uses Apple Vision Pro technology and Apple Immersive Video to place visitors inside a cinematic recreation of the Real Madrid matchday experience.

That shift is important for tourism because it makes the stadium relevant throughout the week rather than only on LaLiga or European matchdays.

Football Creates Multi-Day Madrid Itineraries

Early-season LaLiga fixtures add another layer to the city’s sports calendar. International supporters can combine a Real Madrid match with the Bernabéu Tour, Madrid’s historic centre, shopping around Salamanca and dining experiences across the capital.

The stadium itself has expanded its hospitality proposition, with premium areas offering catering and dedicated services for match attendees. Its wider event programme also includes sports, concerts and corporate experiences, increasing the number of reasons visitors may include the Bernabéu in their Madrid itinerary.

Real Madrid has even introduced combined Tour Bernabéu and hotel packages, further connecting stadium visits with accommodation and city stays.

A Two-Venue Sports Economy

The MADRING and the Bernabéu show different sides of the proposition offered to the sports tourists of Madrid. The Formula 1 offers a huge influx of tourists in a very defined period of time (in the weekends), whereas the Bernabéu offers a permanent attraction with the help of football matches, museums and other events. These factors are going to enhance Madrid’s chances of Madrid in offering sports as an element of a wider travel experience as opposed to just buying tickets for a particular game. In this way, the sports holiday of Madrid would offer opportunities from the Formula 1 race (at the periphery of Madrid) to the famous football stadium of Madrid, with many other activities like museums, restaurants, food, shops, etc.
