Oslo Airport has told travelers to expect delays and disruptions when they travel during the time of the Norwegian funeral on 9 September. The airport will stay open but some services may have to slow down. Travelers are advised to plan for delays while keeping up to date with their flight status. The airport will allow travelers to visit and take their flights, but long security lines may result in travelers missing their flights.

Passengers impacted by any schedule changes will receive updates directly from their airlines. Travellers using Oslo Airport on the day are advised to arrive earlier than usual, stay informed through their airline, and allow additional time for journeys to and from the airport. Temporary restrictions may affect accessibility on sections of the E6 motorway, while train services are expected to operate normally.

“This will be an exceptional day for Oslo Airport and for Norway as a whole. Our priority is to ensure a safe, respectful and efficient operation for visiting guests while continuing to serve all passengers travelling through the airport,” said Thorgeir Landevaag, Airport Director at Oslo Airport.

Airport operator Avinor is coordinating closely with airlines and Norwegian police authorities to prepare for the event. Due to security considerations, Avinor will not release details regarding the schedules, movements or operational arrangements for visiting delegations.

Drone restrictions reinforced around Oslo Airport

Avinor has reminded the public that drone operations are strictly prohibited within five kilometres of any airport unless specific permission has been granted by the local air traffic service. The restriction also applies to the area surrounding Oslo Airport.

Unauthorised drone activity near airports represents a significant aviation safety risk and could result in flight delays, temporary air traffic suspensions and police action.

Authorities are urging people in the airport area during the funeral period to cooperate with security measures, follow instructions from police and airport staff, remain within designated areas, and respect the drone exclusion zone.

“Everyone near the airport during these days has an important role in ensuring a safe and dignified operation. Following instructions, respecting security measures and avoiding drone activity are essential,” Landevaag added.

Media arrangements and security measures

Oslo Airport is preparing for increased media presence in the days before and during the funeral. Avinor, together with the police, will establish specific areas where journalists and photographers can operate.

Members of the press will be required to remain within approved media zones and follow instructions from police officers, security personnel and Avinor representatives.

Authorities have also asked media organisations and visitors to respect security barriers, restricted zones and screened-off areas established to protect guests, airport operations and overall safety. Photography directed towards Norwegian Armed Forces facilities is strictly prohibited.
