Social media/apps are the top influencer for new trends in travel. Social media can inspire/help future travelers plan trips from booking activities and experiences, to recommending/sharing the best travel moments. Short videos and experience content trends on Tik Tok and Instagram change the way travelers pick a destination, and on a local or regional level how they pick an experience.

A growing number of travellers are no longer relying only on traditional recommendations when planning holidays. Online content has become a powerful source of inspiration, with destinations gaining worldwide attention after appearing in viral posts. New research from TUI Musement, a global tours and activities provider, highlights the growing role of social media in tourism decisions, showing that digital platforms are increasingly shaping travel expectations and visitor behaviour.

The research reveals that 39% of travellers have visited a tourist attraction mainly because they wanted to capture photographs or create videos for social media. This trend demonstrates how online visibility has become closely connected with destination popularity, influencing where people travel and which experiences they prioritise.

Search Engines and Social Platforms Become Major Sources of Travel Inspiration

The way travellers discover holiday ideas has changed significantly as digital platforms have become central to travel planning. Search engines remain an important tool, with 42% of respondents using platforms such as Google to find inspiration and research activities. However, social media has reached a similar level of influence, becoming almost as important as personal recommendations from family and friends, which were cited by 41% of travellers.

The shift reflects a wider transformation in consumer behaviour. Instead of depending only on traditional travel advice, tourists are increasingly exploring destinations through images, videos and real-time experiences shared online. A single post showing a unique attraction, cultural experience or scenic location can quickly introduce a destination to millions of potential visitors.

This change is particularly visible among younger generations. Gen Z travellers are leading the move towards social-first travel discovery, with TikTok becoming the most influential platform for finding holiday inspiration. Almost half of Gen Z respondents, at 48%, identified TikTok as a key source of travel ideas, placing it ahead of recommendations from friends and family, which accounted for 43%.

The growing importance of short-form video content highlights how younger travellers are responding to fast, visual and immersive storytelling. Destinations are no longer discovered only through brochures, advertisements or travel guides. Increasingly, they are found through a 30-second video, a creator’s recommendation or a trending online moment.

Viral Travel Content Moves Beyond Inspiration and Drives Bookings

Social media’s influence does not stop at destination discovery. Digital trends are increasingly affecting real purchasing decisions, turning online popularity into measurable tourism demand.

The study shows that more than 43% of travellers have booked a trip or travel activity after seeing a viral post or video. Younger generations are especially influenced by online trends, with millennials recording a 52% response rate and Gen Z travellers reaching 50%.

This indicates that viral content has become a powerful marketing tool for tourism businesses, attractions and destinations. A well-performing video can create immediate interest, increase searches and encourage travellers to move from online viewing to actual bookings.

Travel influencers and content creators are also playing a larger role in shaping consumer choices. Around 43% of respondents said they follow travel influencers when deciding where to visit or what experiences to include in their trips. Furthermore, 27% stated that recommendations from influencers have directly influenced them to change their planned destination.

The popularity of social media-famous locations has also created a new category of tourism demand. Around 37% of travellers said they sometimes prefer visiting well-known Instagram locations instead of choosing less-discovered places. These highly photographed destinations have gained global recognition because of their digital presence, creating new visitor flows and changing the tourism landscape.

The Rise of Photo-Focused Tourism and the Search for Shareable Experiences

Travel has increasingly become connected with digital storytelling. For many visitors, capturing the perfect image or video is now part of the overall holiday experience. Social media is not only a platform for sharing memories after a trip; it is influencing decisions before travellers even arrive.

Nearly four in ten travellers admitted that they have visited a tourist attraction mainly because they wanted to take photographs or record videos. This shows how visual appeal has become a major factor in destination selection.

Tourists are increasingly searching for places that offer unique backgrounds, memorable moments and experiences that can be shared online. Scenic viewpoints, colourful streets, cultural landmarks and unusual activities are receiving greater attention because they perform well on social platforms.

The trend has created both opportunities and challenges for destinations. Popular locations can benefit from increased awareness, higher visitor numbers and stronger global recognition. At the same time, tourism authorities and businesses must manage visitor expectations and ensure that destinations maintain authentic experiences beyond their online popularity.

While social media can introduce travellers to new places, the long-term value of a destination depends on the quality of the experience itself. Visitors increasingly expect meaningful interactions, cultural connections and memorable activities rather than only attractive photographs.

Social Media Creates Pressure to Showcase the Perfect Holiday

Although social media has transformed travel inspiration, it has also changed how people experience their holidays. Many travellers now feel pressure to present exciting and impressive journeys online.

The research found that 73% of respondents share their holidays on social media at least occasionally. However, not everyone shares publicly, with 26% choosing to limit their holiday posts to smaller groups of people.

The desire to create an attractive online image has become a significant part of modern travel behaviour. Around 37% of travellers said they feel pressure to make their trips appear exciting on social media profiles. Among Gen Z, this figure rises to 45%, highlighting the stronger connection between onlineidentity and travel experiences among younger travellers.

This pressure can influence how people choose destinations, activities and even travel companions. For some travellers, excessive focus on creating social media content can affect the enjoyment of the journey itself. The study found that 18% consider an obsession with photography and social media a negative factor when selecting someone to travel with.

The findings demonstrate the complex relationship between technology and tourism. Social media can inspire exploration and help travellers discover extraordinary places, but it can also create expectations that influence how holidays are planned and experienced.

Authentic Experiences Remain the Heart of Modern Travel

Despite the growing power of social media, the research highlights that genuine experiences continue to define successful travel. Digital platforms may encourage people to visit a destination, but the memories created through local culture, activities and personal connections remain the most important part of the journey.

The modern traveller is increasingly influenced by a combination of online inspiration and real-world experiences. Viral content may introduce a destination, but authentic encounters determine whether visitors develop a lasting connection with a place.

For the tourism industry, this shift represents a major opportunity. Destinations, attractions and experience providers can use social media to reach global audiences while focusing on creating meaningful experiences that go beyond temporary online trends.

Social media has permanently changed the travel journey. It has transformed how people dream about holidays, choose destinations and share their adventures. As digital platforms continue to evolve, their influence on global tourism is expected to grow, creating a new era where travel decisions are shaped by both technology and the desire for unforgettable experiences.
