The National Historical Memorial Reserve Babyn Yar stands as a poignant reminder of one of the largest massacres of the Holocaust by bullets. On September 29 and 30, 1941, the Nazis murdered 33,771 Jews at this site. Today, it serves as a significant place of remembrance and education about the Holocaust, emphasizing the international community’s duty to safeguard its legacy.

The Odesa Literary Museum, housed in a historic building within the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Odesa, is a vibrant cultural, educational, and research institution. With a distinguished collection of 19th-century books and publications, it regularly hosts exhibitions and conferences, playing a pivotal role in the cultural life of the city.

These two landmarks join 25 other Ukrainian cultural properties added to the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection in 2023.

Cultural properties granted UNESCO’s enhanced protection enjoy the highest level of immunity against attacks and military use. Violations of these protections constitute a “serious breach” of the 1999 Second Protocol to the Hague Convention and may lead to prosecution. This designation not only reinforces their legal protection but also raises global awareness of the urgent need to preserve these cultural treasures.

This initiative is part of UNESCO’s broader efforts to protect heritage and cultural life in Ukraine since the onset of the war. Since February 2022, the organization has mobilized over $20 million to support cultural professionals and artists, secure historic buildings and museum collections, assess damage, rehabilitate affected sites, and train law enforcement to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural artifacts.
