Global Photography Awards 2026 Announces Powerful Winning Images As Photographers From 40 Countries Earn Global Recognition

The Global Photography Awards 2026, organised by the International Awards Associate (IAA), has revealed its winning photographers, celebrating exceptional talent from professional, amateur and student categories. The competition recognised photographers whose work reflects powerful storytelling, creative vision, artistic expression and advanced technical skills across a wide range of photographic disciplines.

The 2026 edition attracted more than 6,000 submissions from over 40 countries, highlighting diverse perspectives from photographers around the world. Entries showcased remarkable work across multiple genres, including editorial, architecture, nature, people, black-and-white, fine art, commercial photography and other creative fields.

This year’s top honours were awarded to Megumi Murakami from Japan, who was named Professional Photographer of the Year, and João Coelho from Portugal, who earned the title of Amateur Photographer of the Year. In addition, seven photographers were recognised as Category Winners of the Year for producing the highest-scoring images and series within their respective categories.

Megumi Murakami Wins Professional Photographer of the Year Title

Japanese photographer Megumi Murakami secured the Professional Photographer of the Year award for her powerful series titled “Sacred Fire Ritual”, submitted under the Editorial Photography – Religious category.

The photographic series captures a historic 1,200-year-old Shinto ceremony held at Toba Shinmei Shrine in Japan. Through a series of striking images, Murakami documents the intense devotion, tradition and physical challenge experienced by participants who enter a burning structure to recover sacred ropes symbolising the months of the year.

The work highlights the deep cultural significance of the ritual while portraying the courage and spiritual commitment of those involved. For this achievement, Murakami will receive a $5,000 cash prize along with the prestigious 2026 Maia statuette.

João Coelho Recognised as Amateur Photographer of the Year

Portugal’s João Coelho received the Amateur Photographer of the Year award for his editorial project “Plato’s Cave”, entered in the Editorial Photography – Feature Story category.

The series explores the challenging lives of workers involved in dismantling a stranded ship. Using the ship’s dark and restricted interior as a visual setting, Coelho presents a powerful narrative about hardship, isolation and the determination of people searching for better opportunities.

His photographs transform a difficult working environment into a deeper reflection on human resilience and hope. Coelho will receive a $3,000 cash prize and the 2026 Maia statuette in recognition of his achievement.

Each submission was assessed through a rigorous blind judging process, ensuring that all entries were reviewed without access to the photographer’s identity or background details. Professional entries were considered in a dedicated category separate from amateur and student submissions to maintain a fair and balanced evaluation process.

The international judging panel featured acclaimed photographers, creative professionals, commercial imaging experts, visual storytellers and photography educators from around the world. Entries were carefully reviewed based on key criteria including originality, narrative strength, technical quality, artistic execution, visual influence and the overall impact of the work.
