Thailand Expands Big Domestic Tourism Push With 1 Million Travel Entitlements

The travel and tourism industry in Thailand is set for a big push on domestic travel in the latter part of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, when the government introduces the Thai Teaw Thai Plus programme. This program will help motivate locals to travel in their country and make sure that the tourism expenditure is directed to hotels, food services, spas, transportation and shopping services, as well as all other tourism establishments in Thailand. One million travel vouchers are expected to be given by this program, and the government assistance would help cover expenses for hotel bookings, along with additional digital vouchers that can be utilised for tourism expenditure. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports stated that this program would help spread the tourism revenue among different tourism-related businesses. One Million Entitlements Across Thailand

Under the latest framework, each eligible participant can receive up to five entitlements. The accommodation support is structured as a fixed-rate contribution, with the government supporting eligible stays up to the specified limit while travellers pay any remaining amount.

Digital vouchers will also form part of the scheme. These can be used across a broader selection of tourism-related services, including restaurants, cafés, spas, massage services, transport, souvenir shops and other participating businesses.

The wider range of eligible services gives travellers more flexibility beyond simply booking a hotel room. It also connects accommodation spending with dining, wellness, shopping and local experiences during the same trip.

Secondary Destinations Gain Greater Focus

A key tourism aspect of the programme is the higher support available for spending in secondary cities.

The structure provides different voucher values depending on whether travellers spend in major or secondary destinations. Secondary destinations can receive the higher level of support, creating a financial incentive for domestic travellers to consider locations outside Thailand’s busiest tourism centres.

This brings destinations with heritage, nature, wellness and community-based experiences further into the domestic travel picture.

Travellers looking beyond Bangkok and Phuket can consider provinces such as Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phayao, Chiang Rai and Lampang, where cultural attractions, food, nature and local experiences provide different styles of holidays.

Travel Beyond Bangkok and Phuket

Bangkok remains Thailand’s principal urban tourism gateway, with major attractions including the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, riverside districts, shopping centres and extensive dining options.

Phuket continues to serve as one of the country’s leading beach destinations, offering island excursions, coastal resorts, diving, nightlife and access to the Andaman Sea.

The domestic tourism initiative creates a different route for travellers who want to explore beyond these established hubs.

Northern destinations such as Chiang Mai offer temples, mountain landscapes, markets, wellness experiences and cultural attractions. Northeastern provinces provide another travel option through local food, festivals, heritage sites and nature-based activities.

Tourism Spending Extends Beyond Hotels

The programme also expands the potential tourism spending journey.

A traveller using accommodation support in a secondary destination can potentially combine the stay with meals, spa treatments, local transport, shopping and attractions covered by participating businesses.

For smaller tourism operators, this structure connects visitor spending with several parts of the local economy rather than concentrating expenditure solely on accommodation.

The programme is scheduled to operate from November 2026, with a pause during the New Year period before resuming in January 2027. The planned travel period extends into 28 February 2027.

What Travellers Should Know

Registration and participation arrangements are being prepared through Thailand’s existing digital infrastructure, with the government planning a registration period in October before eligible travel begins.

Travellers considering late-2026 domestic breaks can therefore watch for official registration announcements, participating accommodation listings and the final eligibility conditions before booking.

The programme comes as Thailand continues developing tourism beyond visitor volumes, with current destination promotion also placing greater attention on local culture, wellness, meaningful experiences and travel across a wider range of provinces.
