The North Island is bracing for a wet weekend, coinciding with Auckland’s three-day break. This change in weather is linked to Tropical Cyclone Kirrily, currently nearing Queensland, Australia, about 3500km from New Zealand. NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll explained to the media how the cyclone’s moisture, despite its distance, will merge with a low-pressure system in the Tasman Sea, affecting New Zealand.

Noll elaborated that this moisture, drawn from Queensland, will reach the North Island, resulting in rain from Saturday through to possibly Monday. The weather event, while not a direct impact of the cyclone, is influenced by its moisture. He highlighted the uniqueness of this weather system, particularly its slow movement over the North Island, starting from the western and lower areas on Saturday and lingering over various parts on Sunday and Monday.

The forecast predicts persistent rain, with the possibility of increased wind. Noll advised that the weather might not be ideal for outdoor activities during the Auckland Anniversary weekend, especially with heavier rain expected, particularly in the eastern regions on Monday. The rainfall is anticipated to be widespread, affecting much of the North Island, not just Auckland. The system, according to Noll, will distribute rainfall more evenly rather than concentrate it in specific areas.

Humidity levels are also expected to rise on the North Island from late Saturday, continuing through Sunday, but should ease by Monday. This humidity won’t be as intense as in recent times. For the South Island, the weather conditions might be slightly better but not perfect for outdoor activities. While the South Island might experience some wet weather on Saturday morning, conditions are expected to improve for the rest of the weekend.

This forecast poses potential threats for tourists in the region, especially those unprepared for such weather conditions. The persistent rain and possible strong winds can disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities and can even lead to safety concerns in areas prone to flooding or landslides. Tourists are advised to stay informed about the weather updates and plan their activities accordingly, possibly focusing on indoor options to ensure safety and enjoyment during their visit.
