Poland dominates Europe’s backpacker rankings as Kraków takes top spot for 2027

Kraków has emerged as Europe’s leading destination for backpackers, outdistancing Prague, Bruges and other popular cities in a new ranking for 2027. Affordable dorm beds, highly rated hostels and comfortable summer temperatures have strengthened its position, offering budget-conscious travellers a compelling combination of value, accommodation quality and convenience.

Kraków has been named Europe’s best city for backpackers in 2027, combining affordable hostel beds, highly rated accommodation and comfortable summer temperatures. A new study places Porto and Warsaw next, while Barcelona ranks last among 30 destinations, highlighting how accommodation costs, hostel availability and climate can shape budget travel choices.

Kraków leads Europe’s backpacker rankings

Kraków has emerged as the leading European destination for backpackers in 2027, according to a study by Pens.com that assessed 30 cities using accommodation costs, hostel quality, availability and summer temperatures.

The Polish city achieved an overall score of 92.01 out of 100, giving it a clear lead over Porto and Warsaw. Its strongest advantage is the combination of inexpensive dorm accommodation and excellent hostel reviews, making it particularly attractive to travellers trying to control costs without sacrificing accommodation quality.

The median dorm bed in Kraków costs £17.42 per night, while the city’s review-weighted hostel rating reaches 8.33 out of 10. Its average summer temperature of 20.34°C also provides relatively comfortable conditions for walking tours, sightseeing and other outdoor activities.

The findings suggest Kraków offers a strong balance between price, accommodation standards and weather rather than relying on a single advantage.

Why does Porto rank second?

Porto takes second place with a score of 89.77 out of 100, supported by an unusually strong supply of hostels relative to the number of international visitors.

The Portuguese city records 47.84 dorm hostels per 100,000 weekly international arrivals, the highest figure among the destinations analysed. This indicates that backpackers have a broad choice of hostel accommodation relative to visitor demand.

Porto’s median dorm price is higher than Kraków’s at £27.83 per night, but its hostel rating remains strong at 8.21 out of 10. An average summer temperature of 21.09°C further strengthens its appeal.

For backpackers, the combination creates a destination where accommodation choice, quality and manageable summer weather work together.

Warsaw completes the top three

Warsaw ranks third with an overall score of 73.08, making Poland the only country to place two cities in the top three.

The Polish capital has the cheapest median dorm price among the top ten destinations, at just £15.33 per night. That makes it particularly appealing to travellers whose primary consideration is keeping accommodation expenditure low.

Warsaw’s hostel rating of 7.68 out of 10 is lower than those recorded by Kraków and Porto, but remains sufficient to support its strong overall position. The city also records an average summer temperature of 19.87°C.

The result demonstrates that a lower accommodation price can significantly strengthen a city’s position in a backpacker ranking, particularly when accompanied by favourable weather.

Prague and Bruges round out the top five

Prague ranks fourth with a score of 71.38, combining a hostel rating of 8.09 out of 10 with a median dorm price of £26.

The Czech capital records an average summer temperature of 21.39°C, placing it within a comfortable range for visitors exploring the city on foot. Its hostel availability is lower than that of Kraków, Porto and Warsaw, at 18.03 dorm hostels per 100,000 arrivals.

Bruges completes the top five with 67.14 points. The Belgian destination stands out for accommodation quality, recording a hostel rating of 8.28 out of 10, the second-highest result in the study.

However, its median dorm price of £34 is considerably higher than Kraków and Warsaw. Its average summer temperature of 19.61°C remains relatively mild.

Why does Barcelona rank last?

Barcelona sits at the bottom of the 30-city ranking with a score of 32 out of 100, despite being one of Europe’s most recognisable leisure destinations.

The biggest issue identified by the study is accommodation cost. A dorm bed has a median price of £57.33 per night, substantially above the £17.42 recorded in Kraków.

Barcelona also records an average summer temperature of 26.8°C. While this can appeal to travellers seeking hot weather, it may be less comfortable for backpackers spending long periods walking between attractions, particularly during the hottest parts of the day.

The result illustrates that a destination’s popularity does not necessarily translate into strong value for budget travellers.

Paris and Nice face accommodation pressures

Paris ranks second from the bottom with a score of 32, although its median dorm price of £36.92 is considerably lower than Nice’s.

The French capital’s biggest weakness is hostel availability relative to visitor numbers. It records just 1.56 dorm hostels per 100,000 weekly international arrivals, the lowest figure in the study.

Paris also records the lowest hostel rating among the ranked cities, at 7.12 out of 10. Together, limited hostel availability and weaker accommodation ratings reduce its attractiveness for backpackers.

Nice also scores 32 points. Its median dorm price reaches £64, making it one of the most expensive destinations examined and approximately 4.4 times the cost recorded in the cheapest city.

Milan and Rome also struggle in the ranking

Milan ranks fourth from the bottom with a score of 34. Its median dorm price of £35.17 is relatively moderate compared with several other lower-ranked destinations, but the city receives a hostel rating of only 7.51 out of 10.

Its average summer temperature of 27.7°C also places it among the hotter destinations assessed.

Rome completes the bottom five with 36 points. The Italian capital performs better on hostel quality, recording a rating of 8.21 out of 10, but its median dorm price reaches £48.42.

Rome also has only 1.78 dorm hostels per 100,000 arrivals, while its average summer temperature reaches 28.5°C. The combination of accommodation cost, limited hostel supply and high temperatures therefore weakens its position.

What does the study mean for backpackers?

The rankings underline a broader consideration for European backpackers planning trips for 2027: the cheapest destination is not automatically the best destination.

Kraków’s first-place position comes from its balance across several factors. Warsaw has cheaper dorm beds, for example, but Kraków records substantially stronger hostel ratings. Porto has greater hostel availability relative to arrivals, but its accommodation costs are higher.

For travellers planning a multi-city European journey, these differences could influence both the overall budget and the quality of the trip. Hostel prices can represent a significant proportion of daily spending, particularly for younger travellers and long-term backpackers.

The findings also highlight the importance of considering seasonal conditions. Cities such as Rome, Milan, Barcelona and Nice can experience significantly warmer summer temperatures than Kraków, Warsaw and Bruges.

For travellers who prioritise walking and outdoor sightseeing, moderate temperatures may therefore offer an additional practical advantage.

What are the key takeaways for 2027 travel planning?

Kraków’s leading position demonstrates why Central and Eastern European cities continue to offer strong propositions for budget-conscious travellers. Affordable accommodation, good hostel standards and manageable summer temperatures create a combination that is difficult for more expensive Western European destinations to match.

Porto provides a different model, with an extensive hostel supply relative to international arrivals. Warsaw stands out for affordability, while Prague and Bruges benefit from strong accommodation ratings.

At the other end, Barcelona, Paris, Nice, Milan and Rome demonstrate the challenges facing backpackers in some of Europe’s most established tourism markets. Higher accommodation costs, limited hostel supply, lower ratings or hotter summer conditions can all affect value.

The ranking therefore provides a useful starting point rather than a definitive travel decision. Prices and availability can change considerably as the August 2027 travel period approaches, and backpackers should compare accommodation, transport and other daily expenses before booking.

Kraków leads Europe’s backpacker cities for 2027 by combining low dorm prices, excellent hostel ratings and comfortable summer weather. Porto and Warsaw also perform strongly, while Barcelona, Paris, Nice, Milan and Rome face greater affordability or availability challenges. The findings underline the importance of balancing price, quality and climate. The research, conducted by Pens.com, analysed 30 European cities across four key factors: dorm-bed prices, hostel ratings, hostel availability and prices for 1 to 7 August 2027, relative to visitor numbers, and summer temperatures, to find the most backpacker-friendly destinations.

“Backpacking remains an important part of Europe’s tourism landscape, particularly as younger travellers increasingly seek value, flexibility and authentic experiences. Kraków’s leading position demonstrates how affordability and quality can work together. These findings also show that destinations can strengthen their appeal by offering accessible accommodation, strong visitor experiences and comfortable conditions for travellers.” says, Anup Kumar Keshan, Editor-in-Chief, TTW
