Australia’s first regular-season NFL fixture is being supported by specially arranged Qantas A380 flights to Melbourne, bringing the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers to the city for the landmark event. The match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is being accompanied by a noticeable rise in travel demand, particularly from the United States and New Zealand.

With long-haul charter operations, tailored catering and team-branded onboard touches being deployed, the airline partnership has extended well beyond transport. The event itself is therefore being reflected not only in sporting interest, but in stronger international visitor movement into Melbourne during game week.

Qantas A380 Charters Carry Both NFL Teams to Melbourne

The Los Angeles Rams were flown from Los Angeles to Melbourne on a dedicated Qantas charter ahead of Friday’s fixture, while the San Francisco 49ers had been carried from San Francisco the previous week. Both journeys were operated using Airbus A380 aircraft and each covered about 12,900 kilometres. Four pilots, 22 cabin crew members and one travelling charter manager were assigned to each service.

Across the two Qantas A380 flights to Melbourne, more than 20 tonnes of team equipment were transported. The scale of the operation was increased further by the catering requirement, with more than 2,000 meals loaded between the charters. Some catering supplies were even stored in overhead lockers because of the volume being carried.

The journeys were arranged as part of Qantas’ role as Official Airline Partner of the NFL in Australia and New Zealand and of the 2026 NFL Melbourne Game. The arrival of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers has placed aviation at the centre of the event’s travel story, while the Melbourne Cricket Ground is being prepared to host the league’s first regular-season game in Australia. The operation has underlined the long-haul logistics required to stage the NFL game in Melbourne successfully.

NFL Booking Surge Lifts International Travel Into Melbourne

The event has also been accompanied by a sharp increase in travel bookings. Qantas reported that US travel demand to Australia had risen by 50 per cent year on year during the fortnight leading into the game. Demand from New Zealand into Melbourne was reported to be more than 30 per cent higher during game week, while travel into Melbourne from all markets had increased by more than 10 per cent over the same period.

Those booking movements have highlighted the travel dimension surrounding the NFL game in Melbourne. Supporters are being drawn into the city from overseas and from across Australia, reinforcing the role major sporting fixtures can play in generating visitor flows. In this case, sports tourism in Australia is being supported by a combination of international aviation, a globally recognised league and a major stadium event.

The figures also show how US travel demand to Australia has been strengthened around the match. With Qantas serving as the NFL’s official airline partner in Australia and New Zealand, the carrier has been positioned directly within the travel activity created by the fixture and the movement of teams, staff and fans. This has given the event an international travel profile.

Tailored Catering Makes the Long-Haul Journey Part of the Event

The onboard experience was tailored for the two NFL teams. Catering was developed with each club’s nutrition staff, and more protein was loaded than on almost any other Qantas flight. Steak sandwiches were served with extra steak, while double cheeseburger portions, other meats and sides were included to meet the teams’ requirements during the long journey.

Special Qantas pyjamas were produced in the colours of each team for the charter services. Limited-edition versions were also handed to customers on selected flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco at boarding gates, extending the NFL theme to regular passengers travelling from the United States.

Qantas US Network Adds Wider Trans-Pacific Travel Context

Beyond the charters, up to 40 flights each week are operated by Qantas between Australia and the United States. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and New York via Auckland are included within the network. That connectivity has provided a broader aviation backdrop to the rise in sports tourism in Australia surrounding the game.

Preparations with the clubs were said by Qantas to have taken months and were designed to make the flight part of the experience, particularly for athletes and staff making their first visit to Australia. Team transport, hospitality and travel were linked around the historic event.

Conclusion

The arrival of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers has turned the 2026 NFL fixture into a travel moment for Melbourne. Through dedicated Qantas A380 flights to Melbourne, large equipment loads, specialised catering and team-themed onboard touches have been delivered alongside the event.

At the same time, higher bookings from the United States, New Zealand and other markets have demonstrated the wider visitor impact surrounding the match. With the NFL game in Melbourne drawing international attention, sports tourism in Australia has been placed firmly in focus, while Qantas’ trans-Pacific network has supported the movement of teams and fans.
