New African links are widening access. Meanwhile, Ghana is upgrading Accra Airport for heavier flows. Ghana Travel Boom Builds as Air Traffic Surges, New Routes Open and Accra Airport Expansion Accelerates. This time, aviation growth is reaching beyond the runway. It is supporting tourism, diaspora travel, hotels and regional mobility. As connectivity improves, Ghana gains more capacity to welcome travellers, move them faster and turn stronger air access into wider tourism growth.

International Air Travel Reaches 2.54 Million Passenger Movements

GCAA recorded 1,238,220 arriving and 1,300,814 departing international passenger movements during 2025. December was the busiest month, with 246,897 movements, followed by August with 237,734 and July with 227,239.

The second half of the year generated 1.361 million international passenger movements, around 15.6% more than the 1.178 million recorded during January-June.

These aviation figures should not be treated as tourist-arrival numbers because passenger movements also include residents, business travellers and other categories.

Tourism Data Shows Ghana’s Wider Visitor Economy

The Ghana Tourism Authority’s 2024 Tourism Report recorded 1,288,804 international arrivals, up 12% from 1,148,002 in 2023. December 2024 alone recorded 126,791 arrivals, making the festive period particularly important to Ghana’s tourism calendar.

GTA also reported average visitor expenditure of US$3,742.98 over an average stay of 13 days in 2024. Five-star hotels recorded average occupancy of 72.25%, while four-star properties reached 54.52% and three-star hotels 52.42%.

December Travel and Diaspora Connectivity Strengthen

The 2025 aviation figures reinforce December’s importance. International passenger movements reached their annual peak during the month. GTA also launched the seasonal Accra–Atlanta service with Delta on 2 December 2025, identifying diaspora travel and December in GH as important parts of the route’s tourism significance.

This creates a clear connection between air access, festive tourism, diaspora travel and hospitality demand.

New African Air Route Expands Ghana’s Connectivity

Regional connectivity strengthened again when Air Tanzania made its maiden flight to Ghana on 28 January 2026, establishing a direct link between Dar es Salaam and Accra. Ghana’s Transport Ministry said the service would improve mobility between East and West Africa and support tourism and regional integration.

Ghana also backed the 2026 Lomé Ministerial Declaration supporting SAATM, lower aviation costs, improved visa openness and stronger intra-African air connectivity.

Accra Airport Expansion Responds to Passenger Growth

Infrastructure is now following demand. Ghana’s Transport Ministry says passenger traffic at Accra International Airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025. A new concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 is being developed to reduce congestion and improve passenger movement. Plans also include seven advanced baggage scanners, a new air traffic control tower and parking for 2,000 vehicles.

Domestic Aviation Extends Tourism Beyond Accra

GCAA recorded 903,227 domestic passenger movements to and from Accra in 2025. Kumasi led with 486,859 passengers, followed by Tamale with 217,899 and Takoradi with 133,069.

Together, international traffic, domestic flying, new routes and airport investment show how Ghana’s aviation network is becoming increasingly important to the country’s wider tourism economy.

Ghana Travel Boom Builds as Air Traffic Surges, New Routes Open and Accra Airport Expansion Accelerates because several forces are moving together. International passenger movements passed 2.5 million in 2025. December became the busiest month. New African air links widened access. Domestic travel also stayed strong. At the same time, Accra Airport expansion is adding capacity for heavier flows. This matters for tourism because better connectivity can support visitors, diaspora trips, hotels and local spending. Ghana’s travel growth is therefore being driven by more passengers, stronger routes and airport investment, giving the country a wider platform for future tourism expansion.
