India’s Air India is set to deliver a major travel boost with the launch of new 17-hour nonstop flights to North America in one month, strengthening direct connectivity between India and Canada. The new Mumbai to Toronto service is designed to meet rising passenger demand, provide more convenient long-haul travel options and reduce dependence on connecting routes through international hubs. Using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the service will expand Air India’s global network while supporting business, tourism and family travel between the two countries. The new route highlights the airline’s continued efforts to rebuild and grow its international presence.
Air India is preparing to strengthen its international network with a new Mumbai to Toronto service, connecting two major business and travel markets from late October. The new route from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport will add more capacity between India and Canada at a time when long-haul aviation faces operational challenges due to restricted airspace routes and longer flight paths.

The new connection represents a major step for Air India as the airline continues rebuilding its global network. The Mumbai-Toronto route is expected to improve direct connectivity for passengers travelling between western India and Canada while supporting growing demand from business travellers, families and international visitors.
Air India will introduce the Mumbai-Toronto service during the winter aviation schedule, which begins on October 25. The airline is currently planning to operate the route three times every week, giving passengers a new option between India’s financial capital and one of Canada’s busiest international gateways.

The planned schedule shows departures from Mumbai on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The flight will operate under the AI193 code, leaving Mumbai early morning and arriving in Toronto later the same day. The return service, AI192, will depart Toronto around midday and arrive in Mumbai the following day due to the long-distance journey and time difference.
The schedule remains subject to possible adjustments as airlines regularly modify international operations based on demand, aircraft availability and regulatory requirements.
Air India plans to operate the route with its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The wide-body aircraft is among the largest planes in the airline’s fleet and offers significant passenger capacity for long-distance travel.
The aircraft configuration includes eight first-class suites, 40 business-class flat-bed seats and 280 economy-class seats. The cabin layout provides premium options for high-value travellers while also allowing the airline to carry a large number of economy passengers.

The aircraft is also expected to offer upgraded passenger features, including improved entertainment systems, better onboard meals and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Operating flights between India and North America has become more complicated due to changes in available air routes. Air India has been required to avoid certain airspaces, leading to longer journeys on several international sectors.
The airline’s flights to North America have faced restrictions involving Pakistani, Iranian and Russian airspace. Avoiding these regions forces aircraft to take alternative routes, increasing flight times, fuel consumption and operational costs.
Longer routes create additional pressure for airlines because they require more fuel and reduce aircraft efficiency. They can also affect ticket competitiveness as carriers attempt to balance operating expenses with passenger demand.
Despite these challenges, Air India continues expanding its North American network as demand between India and Canada remains strong. The airline is focusing on improving international connectivity and capturing more passengers travelling directly between major Indian cities and overseas destinations.
The Mumbai-Toronto route is supported by a significant travel market. Passenger data indicates that around 128,000 travellers made round trips between the two cities over a 12-month period from June 2025 to May 2026.
This represents an average daily demand of more than 350 passengers, showing consistent interest in travel between Maharashtra and Canada.
Before Air India’s new service, many passengers relied on connecting flights through international hubs in the Middle East and Europe. Airlines including Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Saudia carried passengers through Gulf hubs, while European carriers such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, KLM and SWISS also attracted travellers.
Cathay Pacific provided another connecting option through Hong Kong.
The launch of a direct Air India service is expected to compete with these connecting routes by offering passengers a more convenient travel option.
Although Mumbai and Toronto form the core market, Air India will also depend on connecting passengers from other Indian cities to maintain strong aircraft occupancy.
Major cities expected to contribute additional demand include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai. These cities have large communities connected with Canada and represent important international travel markets.
Air India already operates flights between Delhi and Toronto, making it one of the key players connecting India with Canada. The Mumbai route will expand the airline’s presence while allowing it to capture a larger share of passengers travelling from western and southern India.
However, the introduction of the new service may also shift some passengers away from existing Delhi operations as travellers choose the Mumbai option based on convenience and location.
With only three weekly flights initially, Air India can focus on building demand gradually while maintaining flexibility. The airline will likely monitor passenger response before considering additional frequencies.
India’s Air India is set to transform India-North America travel with a new Mumbai to Toronto nonstop service launching in one month, offering passengers faster direct connectivity and expanding the airline’s global network.
The Mumbai-Toronto launch highlights Air India’s broader international growth strategy. The airline is increasing its presence across important global markets while modernising its fleet and improving passenger experience.
Canada remains a key destination due to strong travel links, business relationships and a large Indian-origin population. By adding another direct connection, Air India aims to strengthen its position in the India-Canada aviation market.
The new route will provide travellers with more choices, reduce dependence on connecting airports and create a stronger link between Mumbai and Toronto.
As international travel demand continues recovering and expanding, Air India’s latest North American expansion reflects the airline’s ambition to become a stronger global carrier with a wider long-haul network.
