It also incorporates aggregated mobile-network information from Telefónica and Orange, digital intelligence from Mabrian, Google Trends, online portals, flight searches, capacity, prices, airport indicators and port statistics.

That architecture matters because El Hierro’s gateway numbers alone cannot reveal the true tourism economy.

A passenger movement can represent a resident leaving the island, the same resident returning, a business traveller, a tourist, an excursionist, a visiting friend or relative, or one traveller appearing in several transport datasets during the same journey.

The Cabildo itself highlighted this distinction in its latest tourism update on 24 August 2026. The 299,481 passenger movements accumulated between January and July cover both arrivals and departures and therefore cannot be treated as the number of different people, much less the number of tourists.

Valverde Reveals Another Blind Spot: International Demand Arrives on Domestic Flights

Valverde is directly relevant to the technology story because El Hierro Airport is located within the municipality of Valverde.

According to Aena, the airport’s traffic is domestic, with Tenerife Norte–Ciudad de La Laguna providing the principal connection and Gran Canaria another important gateway. Aena recorded 313,175 passengers and 6,708 aircraft operations at El Hierro Airport during 2025. Its airline-market data records no direct international passenger traffic.

Yet international travellers clearly reach the island.

During January–June 2026, the latest accommodation information published by the Cabildo counted 2,498 foreign travellers, representing 21% of the 11,882 travellers entering tourism establishments. Another 7,416 came from elsewhere in the Canary Islands and 1,968 from mainland Spain.

This creates an important destination-intelligence problem.

A German, British, French or other international visitor may reach Tenerife or Gran Canaria on an international service and then board a domestic inter-island flight to Valverde. Analysing only the final aviation sector would therefore identify the flight as domestic without explaining the traveller’s actual international origin.

Power BI’s ability to cross-reference accommodation, mobile, search, booking, digital-behaviour and connectivity information gives El Hierro a mechanism for seeing demand that its direct route map cannot show.

For airlines, tourism authorities and tour operators, that distinction is commercially significant. A destination can possess meaningful foreign demand without operating a single direct international route.

July Traffic Growth Makes Better Visitor Attribution More Urgent

The issue is becoming more important because transport volumes continue to rise.

According to Aena, El Hierro Airport handled 32,043 passengers in July 2026, an increase of 5.1% compared with July 2025. Aircraft movements fell 2.6% to 672 during the same month, meaning more passengers were carried despite fewer operations.

Maritime transport added another 24,893 passenger movements during July.

Across the first seven months of 2026, air traffic increased 3% year on year. Maritime services completed 572 journeys, 44.8% more than in 2024. Ferries also carried 49,619 vehicles during the period.

For a small island, those figures make conventional headline traffic totals increasingly inadequate for destination management.

The practical question is no longer simply how many passengers passed through Valverde Airport or La Estaca port. El Hierro needs to understand how many were tourists, where they originated, how long they stayed, where they travelled after arrival, what accommodation they used, what they searched for and which experiences generated spending.

That is the deeper function of the island’s Big Data Turístico programme.

Holiday Rentals Make El Hierro’s Tourism Picture Even Harder to Measure

Accommodation structure creates another reason for combining multiple data sources.

According to figures published by the Cabildo in June, El Hierro had 862 active accommodation establishments offering 3,965 places, including 689 holiday-rental properties providing 2,528 places. Hotels accounted for 376 places.

Derived from those official figures, holiday rentals represent approximately 80% of active accommodation establishments and nearly 64% of available accommodation capacity.

That is a major tourism-intelligence consideration.

Traditional hotel statistics alone would capture only a limited part of El Hierro’s tourism footprint. The Cabildo has consequently identified more than 2,600 holiday-rental places as a particularly important element requiring better measurement through cross-referenced datasets.

This helps explain why mobile-network information, digital searches, accommodation inventories and gateway data are being combined rather than relying on a single statistical series.

Power BI Turns Fragmented Signals Into Destination Intelligence

The Power BI initiative began as part of the island’s broader Big Data Turístico programme. Technical and administrative work started in 2024 and continued through 2025 and 2026 with data procurement, contracting, source integration and dashboard construction.

It sits within the Smart Island pillar of the approved Estrategia Digital El Hierro 2025.

According to that official digital strategy, Big Data tourism is intended to provide useful information and data models to public authorities and businesses, improve visitor services, accelerate digital transformation, support a data economy and improve the sustainable management of island resources.

On 15 July 2026, the Canary Islands Government and Cabildo inaugurated the Parque Astronómico de El Julan in El Pinar.

The Cabildo’s NextGenerationEU register states that El Hierro received €2.81357 million through an extraordinary Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination allocation covering 21 actions. It would therefore be premature to describe El Hierro en Datos as a completed public-facing service unless the Cabildo issues further confirmation.

The analytical platform and data-integration work are real. The public portal’s final launch status should remain a separate question.

El Hierro’s experiment could have implications far beyond one small Spanish island.

The conventional tourism model often measures success through airport passengers, hotel stays and headline arrival numbers. El Hierro’s circumstances expose the weaknesses of that approach. Domestic connecting flights can hide international origin. Transport movements can exaggerate unique visitor numbers. Holiday rentals can weaken hotel-based visibility. Short stays can produce very different economic effects from longer specialist trips.

Power BI gives the island the architecture to begin joining those fragments.

El Pinar’s new astronomy park then gives tourism planners a concrete new product against which changes in demand, seasonality and visitor behaviour can eventually be evaluated.

For Spain’s smaller destinations and other island economies, the larger lesson is that the next stage of smart tourism may not depend on attracting more travellers. It may depend on identifying them correctly, understanding how they move and directing demand towards experiences capable of producing greater economic value without overwhelming limited territory.

As of 31 August 2026, that visitor-attribution challenge makes El Hierro one of the more interesting small-scale Travel Technology experiments to watch in Spain.
