It should be noted that Thailand and Malaysia have started a new period of regional connectivity after the launch of a new road from Sadao Customs House in Songkhla to the Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint in Kedah, Malaysia. This infrastructure development was launched on 10 July 2026 and is supposed to contribute to increased mobility across the borders of Thailand and Malaysia and to promote tourism development as well as tourism flow between southern Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The ceremony was held jointly by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the new road can be seen not only as a transport development but as a tourism infrastructure one as well. This way, the connection will help to turn a traditional border crossing point into an advanced regional travel gateway. The infrastructure development contributes to the implementation of the policy of Ease of Travelling in Thailand as well as cooperation within the Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle.

New Sadao Route Creates Opportunities For Southern Thailand Tourism Expansion

The newly opened road is expected to improve access between Malaysia and popular destinations across southern Thailand. By reducing travel barriers at one of the busiest border areas between the two countries, the connection can encourage more visitors to explore destinations beyond the immediate border region. TAT believes the infrastructure will strengthen southern Thailand’s position as a gateway connecting Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, creating opportunities for longer stays and wider travel itineraries.

The development is particularly significant for destinations such as Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat, where authorities are seeking to attract more international visitors and distribute tourism benefits across different communities. Improved overland access can encourage weekend trips, family holidays, road journeys and independent travel, allowing visitors to explore more destinations during their journeys.

Thailand Promotes Value Driven Tourism Through Better Connectivity

The new road supports Thailand’s shift towards a Value over Volume tourism approach, where success is measured not only by visitor numbers but also by economic contribution, visitor experience and sustainable destination development. TAT has highlighted that improved connectivity should generate stronger benefits for local communities by encouraging visitors to spend more time and money across different areas. Better transport links can support local hotels, restaurants, attractions, retailers and tourism operators by increasing visitor movement through southern Thailand.

The authority aims to ensure that infrastructure improvements translate into meaningful tourism growth rather than simply increasing border crossings. This approach reflects a broader global trend where destinations are focusing on higher-quality tourism experiences and stronger economic returns from visitors.

TAT Expands Marketing Campaigns Around Cross Border Travel Opportunities

Following the opening of the Sadao connection, the TAT Kuala Lumpur Office is increasing promotional activities aimed at Malaysian travellers. The campaigns will combine overland travel promotion with aviation partnerships, scenic driving routes and cross-border tourism programmes.

TAT plans to cooperate with airlines, online travel platforms, travel agencies, tourism operators and Malaysian travel communities to encourage visitors to continue beyond border destinations and discover more of southern Thailand. The authority is particularly targeting groups interested in private vehicle journeys, motorcycle tours, road trips and family travel. By promoting multi-destination routes, Thailand hopes to encourage visitors to explore a wider range of attractions while supporting regional tourism development.

New Hat Yai Project Aims To Showcase Southern Thailand Experiences

A major initiative connected with the new border link is the upcoming New Hat Yai project, designed to introduce fresh perspectives on one of southern Thailand’s most important tourism centres. TAT plans to invite influential Malaysian travellers and opinion leaders to experience Hat Yai and nearby destinations, highlighting new travel possibilities across the region. The programme will connect Hat Yai with destinations including Phatthalung, Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat, creating broader travel routes for visitors.

Additional activities supporting the tourism push will include roadshows, joint marketing campaigns, familiarisation trips, influencer content, Muslim-friendly travel promotion, sporting events, incentive travel programmes and business events. These initiatives aim to increase destination awareness and encourage visitors to move beyond traditional tourism areas.

Southern Thailand Gains Stronger Position As ASEAN Travel Hub

The Sadao–Bukit Kayu Hitam connection strengthens Thailand’s role as a regional tourism hub within Southeast Asia. Southern Thailand benefits from its geographical position between major markets, particularly Malaysia and Singapore. With improved road infrastructure combined with expanding rail, maritime and air connections, the region has greater potential to become an integrated travel corridor.

For international travellers, improved connectivity means easier access to beaches, cultural attractions, nature destinations and food experiences across southern Thailand. For tourism businesses, stronger movement between countries can create new opportunities in accommodation, transportation, retail and visitor services. The development also supports wider ASEAN objectives focused on regional mobility and economic cooperation.

Tourist Safety Remains A Priority Along New Border Gateway

Alongside connectivity improvements, TAT has emphasised the importance of visitor safety and security. The authority will continue working with government agencies and tourism partners to provide clear travel information, visitor assistance and support services for travellers using the Sadao gateway. Safety measures remain essential as border tourism expands and more visitors use overland routes between Thailand and Malaysia.

Providing reliable information and assistance helps build traveller confidence and supports sustainable tourism growth. TAT’s approach combines easier movement with responsible tourism management to ensure that increased visitor flows benefit both travellers and local communities.

Malaysia Remains Thailand’s Key Short Haul Tourism Market

Malaysia continues to be one of Thailand’s most important international tourism markets. From 1 January to 8 July 2026, Thailand recorded 2,142,904 Malaysian arrivals, placing Malaysia as the country’s second-largest source market after China. Thailand has set a target of 4,825,000 Malaysian visitors for 2026, supported by strong demand for independent travel, family holidays and short breaks.

Malaysian visitors are attracted to Thailand’s diverse tourism offerings, including gastronomy, culture, wellness, beaches, nature, shopping and local experiences. The new border connection is expected to further support this demand by making travel more convenient and encouraging repeat visits.

Sadao Bukit Kayu Hitam Link Creates New Future For Thailand Malaysia Tourism

The opening of the link between the Sadao Customs House and Bukit Kayu Hitam Road marks an important step towards Thai-Malaysian tourism cooperation. By facilitating better access to the border region, enabling road movement, and developing tourism destinations, the project brings about new possibilities for the Thai tourism industry in the south of the country.

It shows that transport networks may be used as a basis for further tourism development and regional cooperation. In line with Thailand’s efforts to create its image as an ASEAN tourism destination, the improvement of connections with neighboring countries will play a vital role in the future.
