Paris tourism heavily affected by COVID-19 pandemic

As per new reports, Paris has been declared as one of the worst affected countries in terms of tourism as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. France’s greatest attraction, Paris, is seeing a massive decline in tourism, even after Europe opened its doors for travellers.

The city had only between 3.6 million to 4.7 million visitors this year as compared to the 10 million tourists between June and August 2019 during the same months. The decline in tourism is attributed to the fact that most tourists from far off places are not travelling to France this year

France had earlier segregated countries in a red, orange, and green colour-coded system, determining whether visitors need to take a covid test before arriving, quarantine rules, and also the urgency of the visit. Even though much of France was finally opened for tourists like the majority of its popular museums and other attractions, the number of inbound tourists in Paris has been a disappointment.

In fact, reports suggest that Paris’ occupancy rates are worse than anywhere else in France. The hotel revenues are down 60 per cent in the city. River Seine, which happens to be one of the main attractions of the city, has also been affected by the drop in the number of tourists.

Boating company Vedettes de Paris that offers sightseeing on the Seine, has had a 50 per cent drop this year in comparison to 2019. The Eiffel Tower that opened up in mid-July also saw half its usual daily number of visitors. While a decline in the number of tourists is best due to the current situation of the pandemic, tourism reliant destinations such as Paris have been largely affected by COVID-19.
