There is an ongoing trend towards a geographical change in Portuguese tourism that involves more tourists venturing from the cities of Lisbon and Porto to other parts of the country, including the regions of Alentejo and Douro Valley. This is due to rising temperatures in the summer period and pressures on Portugal’s main cities as destinations, thus causing tourism to take place in other destinations within the country. This is especially so during the period of autumn when temperatures become cool and the focus turns to destinations in the interiors which offer walking trails, wine tasting opportunities, and heritage sites. Tourism in Alentejo has increased by 8.8%, thus making destinations outside the two main cities more important.

Alentejo Emerges as a Stronger Tourism Destination

Alentejo is becoming an increasingly important part of Portugal’s tourism geography. The region offers a combination of historic towns, rural landscapes, vineyards, traditional villages and extensive countryside that can support longer visits without relying on the high-density urban tourism model found in Lisbon.

The region’s 8.8% revenue growth signals increasing visitor spending and provides evidence of stronger tourism activity beyond Portugal’s best-known destinations.

For autumn travellers, Alentejo’s inland setting is particularly suited to outdoor exploration. Walking routes and countryside experiences become more practical as temperatures fall from their summer peaks, while vineyards and food-producing areas provide additional reasons to extend stays.

Historic destinations across the region can also be incorporated into multi-day itineraries, allowing travellers to combine cultural tourism with nature and gastronomy rather than concentrating their visit around a single urban centre.

Douro Valley Builds a Longer Autumn Season

The Douro Valley is similarly benefiting from changing travel patterns. Known internationally for its terraced vineyards and wine-producing heritage, the valley provides a distinctive tourism proposition in northern Portugal.

Its appeal extends beyond wine tourism. River landscapes, historic settlements, walking routes and vineyard experiences can encourage visitors to remain in the region for several nights.

Autumn is particularly significant for the Douro because the landscape and wine culture provide a seasonal travel proposition at a time when Portugal’s major urban destinations are no longer experiencing the same peak-summer intensity.

The journey can start with either Lisbon or Porto, before moving into smaller destinations where there are enough cultural, accommodation, trail and food experiences to warrant a longer stay. The 8.8% revenue growth seen in Alentejo, in conjunction with an increased fall interest in the Douro Valley, shows just how successful such a strategy can be. Regional rail development and trail tourism continue to build on this new approach through enhancing travel experiences of inland Portugal.
