Brazil Tourism Uncovers the Prehistoric World of Serra da Capivara

The Brazilian Tourism company is planning an exclusive tour of archaeology and nature within Serra da Capivara National Park, an area containing immense sandstone rock formations, canyons, and numerous examples of prehistoric rock art within the semi-arid region of Caatinga in southeast Piauí. As a World Heritage site due to its remarkable significance regarding archaeology, the national park incorporates prehistory tourism along with hiking and landscape tourism. Located in São Raimundo Nonato, the park encompasses an area of more than 100,000 hectares with the greatest number of archaeological sites in the Americas. According to recently obtained information from Brazil’s Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), there are 1,000 recorded archaeological sites, among which 204 sites are available for tourists.

Serra da Capivara Turns Rock Art Into a Travel Experience

The principal attraction is the extraordinary collection of rock paintings and engravings preserved on sandstone cliffs and natural rock shelters.

Scenes depicting animals, people, hunting activities and other aspects of prehistoric life cover the walls of numerous archaeological sites. The Boqueirão da Pedra Furada area is among the best-known locations, combining archaeological discoveries with dramatic geological formations and panoramic viewpoints.

Research in the region has produced evidence for very early human occupation of the Americas, with official park information citing dating associated with Boqueirão da Pedra Furada reaching approximately 48,000 years. These findings have made Serra da Capivara an important destination for archaeological tourism and scientific interest.

For travellers, however, the archaeological sites form only part of the experience. The surrounding landscape creates a network of walking circuits through cliffs, ravines, sandstone arches and dry forest.

Guided Trails Lead Through the Caatinga

Visitors explore Serra da Capivara through organised circuits that vary considerably in length and difficulty. Short walks provide access to selected archaeological sites, while longer trails can involve several hours of hiking through the park.

The Desfiladeiro da Capivara, Baixão da Pedra Furada, Circuito da Serra Branca, Circuito da Jurubeba and Baixão das Andorinhas are among the park’s established visitor areas.

The landscape changes noticeably according to the season. During the rainy period, the Caatinga can become greener, with flowering plants appearing across the terrain and temporary waterfalls forming along some escarpments. During the drier months, the vegetation sheds much of its foliage, revealing more of the geological structure and creating different conditions for hiking and photography.

Local Guides Are Central to Park Visits

Travel through Serra da Capivara is structured around accredited local guides.

ICMBio states that the presence of a registered guide is mandatory for visitor programmes, with each guide able to lead groups of up to eight people. The park maintains an updated list of accredited conductors, including guides qualified for archaeological and historical sites, natural-environment observation, longer hikes and cycling experiences.

This system gives visitors access to the archaeological circuits while providing a direct role for local tourism professionals in the park economy.

Independent access is therefore not the standard visitor model. Travellers planning hiking or archaeological excursions need to arrange a registered local guide and select circuits appropriate to their time and physical ability.

Canyons Add an Adventure Tourism Dimension

Serra da Capivara is also a major landscape destination.

Ruiniform sandstone canyons, narrow passages, natural arches and towering red and ochre cliffs create a setting that extends well beyond the archaeological sites. Several viewpoints provide wide panoramas across the Caatinga, while trails descend into sheltered valleys and rock formations.

At Baixão das Andorinhas, visitors can watch birds entering canyon shelters toward the end of the day. The park also supports diverse wildlife, including armadillos, anteaters, deer, peccaries, monkeys and several wild cat species.

Birdwatching and nature observation can therefore be incorporated into archaeological itineraries, giving visitors several reasons to spend multiple days in the region.

São Raimundo Nonato Forms the Main Tourism Base

São Raimundo Nonato serves as the principal base for exploring the national park. The town is located approximately 26 kilometres from the Boqueirão da Pedra Furada entrance, while Coronel José Dias provides another access point and accommodation option.

The park itself does not provide visitor lodging or camping, so travellers stay in hotels and pousadas in nearby communities. ICMBio also notes that public transport from São Raimundo Nonato or Coronel José Dias directly to park entrances is currently unavailable, making organised transfers, taxis or private transport important considerations when planning a visit.

Serra da Capivara Expands Brazil’s Archaeological Tourism

Tourists visiting Serra da Capivara will have a unique experience in Brazil because archaeology, hiking, and Caatinga scenery go together here.
