The way travel is being planned across the United States is being transformed by a growing desire to reconnect with cherished memories and familiar experiences from the past. According to recent research, nostalgia travel, 2026 travel trends, American travellers, millennials, and Gen Z travellers are becoming deeply interconnected themes influencing the tourism industry. Rather than pursuing entirely new experiences, emotional comfort and cultural familiarity are increasingly being prioritised by travellers seeking meaningful connections with earlier decades.

Research commissioned by Visit Anaheim and conducted by Talker Research has indicated that nearly half of Americans believe 2026 will be defined by nostalgia. A powerful shift in travel behaviour is being witnessed as people actively search for destinations that recreate beloved memories, iconic entertainment references, and vintage experiences associated with their childhood and adolescent years.

This movement is being particularly driven by younger generations who are embracing retro culture with surprising enthusiasm. The trend is no longer being viewed as a niche interest but as a significant force shaping destination choices, travel spending, and holiday activities throughout the country.

Why Is Nostalgia Becoming One of the Biggest Travel Trends of 2026?

The findings emerged from a survey involving 2,000 Americans, revealing that 48% consider 2026 to be a year dominated by nostalgia-related experiences. A substantial generational divide was also observed, with younger travellers displaying even stronger emotional attachments to the concept.

Among Gen Z respondents, 61% expressed the belief that nostalgia would heavily influence this year, while 54% of millennials shared the same sentiment. Interestingly, generations that did not directly experience parts of the 1980s and 1990s are now actively embracing those eras through entertainment, music, fashion, and travel.

A growing appetite for simpler and more familiar experiences is being created by increasing digital saturation and the constant pace of modern life. Travel, therefore, is being used as an opportunity to disconnect from present-day pressures while reconnecting with cultural memories that feel comforting and authentic.

The trend demonstrates how emotional value is becoming just as important as geographical appeal when destinations are being selected.

How Is Nostalgia Influencing Travel Decisions?

The research also revealed that nostalgia is not simply affecting where people travel. It is influencing what travellers choose to do once they arrive.

Approximately 53% of respondents indicated that nostalgia would directly impact their destination choices. Meanwhile, 50% stated that it would shape the activities they participate in during their holidays.

This behavioural shift suggests that experiences are increasingly being valued over traditional sightseeing. Instead of focusing exclusively on landmarks and museums, travellers are seeking retro arcades, vintage shops, roller-skating rinks, record stores, and immersive environments that recreate earlier decades.

Holiday itineraries are consequently being redesigned around emotional experiences rather than conventional tourism checklists.

Travel providers and destination marketers are also being encouraged to adapt their offerings by highlighting cultural nostalgia instead of solely promoting modern attractions.

How Were America’s Most Nostalgic Cities Identified?

In response to the growing popularity of nostalgia travel, BetMGM Arcade released a detailed ranking highlighting the American cities best equipped to deliver memorable retro experiences for millennial travellers.

The study was developed by analysing the 20 most popular cities in the United States, using data sourced from YouGov’s The Most Popular Cities rankings.

Several measurable variables associated with 1980s and 1990s nostalgia were incorporated into the methodology. Physical venues, themed music events, and demographic factors were carefully assessed to determine each city’s ability to recreate the atmosphere of previous decades.

Researchers focused specifically on 13 venue categories commonly associated with nostalgic experiences. These included arcades, comic book stores, DVD stores, vintage shops, roller-skating rinks, and record stores.

Music culture was also heavily considered. TicketMaster data was utilised to calculate the average number of 1980s and 1990s-themed ticketed events planned across a future three-month period.

Following the analysis, every city received an overall nostalgia score that reflected its capacity to deliver retro-inspired experiences.

Why Did New York City Secure the Top Position?

New York City emerged as the undisputed leader, earning an impressive nostalgia score of 148.

Its dominance was attributed to an enormous concentration of venues that evoke memories of previous decades. Comic book stores, record shops, roller-skating facilities, and numerous entertainment spaces were identified as key contributors.

However, New York City’s greatest nostalgic asset extends far beyond its physical venues.

For decades, the city has served as the backdrop for globally recognised movies and television programmes that continue to resonate with multiple generations.

Friends, Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, Home Alone 2 and Ghostbusters have all contributed to New York City’s enduring cultural significance.

For many travellers, visiting these locations offers the opportunity to step directly into scenes they have watched countless times over the years.

This unique blend of pop culture heritage and tangible experiences has strengthened New York City’s position as America’s ultimate nostalgia destination.

Which Other American Cities Are Delivering Powerful Nostalgic Experiences?

While New York City claimed first place, several other destinations performed remarkably well.

Dallas, Texas secured second position with a score of 129, followed by Houston, Texas at 112.

Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona jointly earned scores of 98, demonstrating their strong appeal among retro-focused travellers.

Other major cities such as Atlanta, Boston, San Diego, Tampa and Austin also entered the top ten.

Many of these cities possess thriving entertainment scenes, extensive collections of vintage establishments, and regular themed events celebrating music and culture from earlier decades.

Their diverse offerings are making nostalgia accessible to travellers regardless of their preferred style of holiday.

Instead of concentrating nostalgia within a single destination, the trend is now being distributed throughout multiple regions across the country.

What Does This Trend Reveal About The Future Of Travel?

A significant transformation in tourism priorities is being highlighted by this movement. Emotional connection is increasingly being elevated above novelty.

Travellers are no longer exclusively chasing unfamiliar adventures. Instead, meaningful experiences rooted in memory, identity and cultural familiarity are being actively pursued.

The tourism industry is therefore being challenged to evolve. Destinations capable of blending entertainment, pop culture, music and retro experiences may continue attracting larger numbers of visitors throughout the coming years.

As digital lifestyles become increasingly dominant, nostalgia is being embraced as an antidote to constant connectivity and information overload.

Ultimately, the success of nostalgia travel demonstrates that some of the strongest travel motivations are no longer being built around discovering something entirely new, but around rediscovering something emotionally familiar.
