Alteon’s Groundbreaking Aircraft Technology Could Redefine Surveillance, Science and Future Aviation

Alteon, a deep-tech aerospace company focused on developing aircraft capable of staying airborne for months, has secured $2.5 million in pre-seed funding in a round led by Lachy Groom, with additional investment from Together Fund. The funding comes shortly after a significant flight test milestone, where Alteon’s aircraft successfully demonstrated autonomous flight at an altitude of less than one metre above the ocean surface. The achievement helped validate a critical component of the technology required for long-duration autonomous flight.

While aviation has made major advances in speed, efficiency and range, aircraft have always faced a fundamental limitation — the need to return to the ground for refuelling, maintenance and recovery. Alteon is working to overcome this challenge by designing aircraft that can remain continuously airborne for extended periods, with development efforts focused on achieving flight endurance lasting several months.

The company is building autonomous dynamic soaring aircraft inspired by the flight techniques used by albatrosses, which harness energy from differences in wind speed and direction to travel vast distances with minimal energy consumption. However, replicating this capability through autonomous systems presents significant engineering challenges, especially when operating close to the surface of a constantly changing ocean environment.

During an offshore flight test in early August, Alteon’s aircraft completed several consecutive autonomous loops while flying less than one metre above the open sea. The successful demonstration marked an important step towards achieving sustained dynamic soaring capability, proving that the aircraft could perform complex manoeuvres safely under real-world ocean conditions.

“Today we already know that it is possible to gain energy from the wind using dynamic soaring. Building aircraft that fly for over a year using it, is not a matter of a single technical breakthrough but a matter of solving a range of challenging engineering problems across autonomy, structures, aero and more. As we go from measuring flight time in hours to months, the standard everything has to meet goes up with it. Ultra high endurance is downstream of ultra high efficiency, precision and reliability. Alteon’s upcoming testing programme will centre on capturing and using wind energy to extend flight endurance, with the ultimate goal of achieving propulsion-free flight. The company aims to replicate the natural energy-efficient soaring ability of albatrosses, allowing its aircraft to remain airborne by continuously extracting energy from wind patterns.

The journey behind Alteon began in 2023 when Samay Sanghvi started exploring the technology soon after completing high school. With no formal engineering background, Sanghvi developed his skills through hands-on experimentation, designing, building and repeatedly testing radio-controlled aircraft prototypes. These early trials, including failures and crashes, helped shape the foundation of Alteon’s aerospace technology. Supported initially by Emergent Ventures and 1517, he officially launched Alteon in 2025. The company has since expanded into a 20-member team headquartered in Bengaluru.

Alteon will use the new funding to advance its progress beyond the successful August offshore flight test, moving closer to achieving fully autonomous dynamic soaring without traditional propulsion. The company will also expand its research and development efforts to support the future deployment of large-scale aircraft fleets operating continuously over the ocean.

The mission goes beyond extending aircraft flight times. Alteon aims to enable persistent, autonomous aerial operations across the world’s oceans. These aircraft fleets could support a wide range of uses, including weather and ocean monitoring, maritime traffic tracking, fishing activity observation, critical infrastructure surveillance, and coordination of autonomous systems across defence, emergency response, scientific research and commercial sectors.

By creating a continuous real-time intelligence network over the oceans, Alteon’s technology could deliver advanced monitoring capabilities at a significantly lower cost compared with conventional solutions such as ships, satellites and major offshore facilities.

A fleet capable of remaining in the sky for months would enable continuous surveillance instead of relying on occasional monitoring missions. This persistent aerial presence could help authorities identify, prevent and respond to activities such as illegal fishing, smuggling and other maritime crimes. It could also strengthen national security capabilities by providing early detection and faster response to potential threats, including situations similar to the vulnerabilities highlighted during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
