In 2026, the UAE still provides its citizens with residency through self-sponsorship for freelancers, self-employed persons and remote workers from abroad. It is essential for people wishing to obtain residency in this country to differentiate between official requirements for such residency and additional requirements in the form of documents that may be required by the immigration authorities. There have been no official statements made by the UAE federal government about the introduction of more stringent corporate bank validations in relation to the Green Visa, freelance residence, or any other remote work permit in September 2026. Officially, the requirements include income, financial stability, professional permits and employment, depending on the category of residency. For foreign nationals who want to move to the UAE, it is critical to differentiate between official requirements and others that may be asked for in the course of the application process.

The UAE Green Residence remains a five-year renewable residency option that allows eligible individuals to live in the country without relying on a traditional employer sponsor. The federal programme covers skilled workers, freelancers, self-employed individuals, investors and business partners.

For freelancers and self-employed applicants, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security requires a valid freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

Applicants must also hold at least a bachelor’s degree, specialised diploma or an equivalent qualification. The published federal requirements include annual freelance income of at least AED 360,000 during the previous two years, or evidence demonstrating financial solvency during the residence period.

The AED 360,000 annual figure is equivalent to an average of AED 30,000 per month when divided across 12 months. However, the official requirement is expressed as annual income rather than a monthly salary requirement.

Dubai Freelance Residency Continues Under Green Residence

Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs currently provides a dedicated Green Residence route for self-employed individuals.

The official service allows eligible applicants to obtain residence without a guarantor, employer or employment contract. A valid self-employment permit from MoHRE is required, alongside the applicable educational qualification and income or financial-solvency evidence.

Applications can be processed through Dubai’s digital immigration channels or authorised Amer service centres. GDRFA currently lists an expected completion time of 48 hours, provided the application meets the applicable requirements.

For freelancers already working with international clients, maintaining clear income records and valid professional documentation can therefore be important when preparing a residency application.

Remote Workers Follow a Different Residency Route

The UAE’s virtual-work residency should not be confused with the Green Residence for freelancers.

Dubai’s Virtual Work Residence is intended for individuals working remotely for an organisation located outside the UAE. Applicants must demonstrate their overseas employment or professional relationship and show that their work is conducted remotely.

GDRFA’s current requirements include a minimum monthly income of US$3,500 and valid health insurance. The residence is issued for one year and can be extended subject to the applicable conditions.

This distinction is particularly important in 2026. A person operating independently as a freelancer may need to qualify under the self-employment framework, while an employee working remotely for an overseas company may use the virtual-work pathway.

Financial Proof Is an Important Part of the Application

Financial evidence can play a significant role in self-sponsored residency applications.

For Green Residence applicants, the federal authority specifically provides financial solvency as an alternative where the required historical freelance-income threshold is not being used. Applicants should therefore be prepared to demonstrate that their financial circumstances support the requested residency.

At the same time, the currently published federal and Dubai requirements do not establish a universal rule requiring every freelancer to undergo corporate bank-account validation.

This means applicants should avoid relying on unofficial claims that a new corporate banking requirement automatically applies to every Green Visa or freelance residency application.

What UAE Applicants Should Prepare in 2026

Professionals planning to apply for UAE residency should check the requirements applicable to their specific category before submitting documents.

Key areas to review include:

  • Valid freelance or self-employment permits where required.
  • Educational qualifications required for Green Residence eligibility.
  • Evidence of the required annual freelance income.
  • Financial solvency documentation where applicable.
  • Proof of overseas employment for virtual-work applicants.
  • The current US$3,500 monthly income requirement for Dubai’s virtual-work route.
  • Valid health insurance where required.
  • Passport and other immigration documents.
  • Any additional documents specifically requested by the immigration authority handling the application.

Applicants should also make sure that financial information is consistent across supporting documents. Differences between declared income, contracts, invoices and bank records can create additional questions during an application review.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi Applications Should Be Checked Separately

Whereas the residency policy is regulated under the overall immigration policy in the UAE, the applications may have to go through various federal and emirates agencies. Immigration services in Dubai, for example, are organised through GDRFA Dubai, whereas federal immigration services are processed through ICP. This means that each applicant has to identify the authority dealing with the respective application rather than assuming that all requirements specified for one option apply throughout the country. For those international freelancers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals interested in residency in the UAE in 2026, the key question is how their employment arrangements and financial papers match the existing residency categories.
