There has been a reduction in the number of visitors to Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap, with a 29.07% reduction in the number of tourists in the first eight months of 2026, as per the official statistics. In 2026, from January to August, Angkor Enterprise stated that 474,993 foreign tourists have visited Angkor Archaeological Park. It has also been observed that there has been a reduction in the number of tourists by 29.07% in 2026 compared to the previous year. Moreover, the reduction in the number of tickets sales revenue has resulted in a 27.4% reduction compared to 2025, with a reduction of $22.54 million in the revenue. As per the data provided by the Ministry of Tourism, there are certain reasons for the reduction in the number of tourists due to regional border tensions, geopolitical factors, and international flights, among others. It is definite that international travel would be influenced due to the reasons mentioned above. Tourists in the country would be able to experience the cultural tour at the site related to the Khmer Empire.

Major Angkor Attractions for Travellers

Angkor Wat remains the best-known attraction within the park and is a central feature of many Siem Reap itineraries. Visitors can explore its galleries, towers, courtyards and stone reliefs. The monument is frequently included in early morning sightseeing schedules.

Bayon Temple provides another major stop within the archaeological complex. It is recognised for its large carved stone faces and is situated within the ancient city of Angkor Thom. Nearby sites allow travellers to continue exploring the architectural and archaeological remains of the former Khmer capital.

Ta Prohm offers a different setting with vegetation surrounding and growing across parts of its ancient structures. The temple is among the most recognisable locations in the Angkor complex and can be combined with Angkor Wat and Bayon during a day of sightseeing.

Siem Reap functions as the principal tourism base for visitors travelling to Angkor Archaeological Park. The city provides hotels, restaurants, transport services, guides, tour operators and other facilities supporting international travellers.

Travellers planning a visit can build short or extended itineraries around the archaeological park. A shorter stay may focus on Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm, while longer visits can include additional temples and archaeological areas across the complex.

Travel Conditions Affecting Cambodia Tourism

The size of the park means transportation is an important part of sightseeing. Visitors can arrange local transport or guided tours between individual monuments. Early starts can provide additional sightseeing time and allow travellers to explore major sites before the hottest part of the day.

International aviation connectivity remains an important factor for Cambodia tourism because overseas visitors rely on air services and regional connections when travelling to Siem Reap. Changes affecting international routes can influence flight options, connections, journey times and travel planning.

Regional border conditions are also relevant to visitors combining Cambodia with neighbouring Southeast Asian destinations. Multi-country itineraries may involve flights or land crossings and travellers need to check current transport arrangements and border conditions before departure.

The January to August results do not represent Cambodia’s full-year tourism performance. Visitor numbers during the remaining months will determine the final annual result for Angkor and its associated ticket revenue.

The decline in ticket revenue was smaller in percentage terms than the reduction in international visitor numbers. Angkor Enterprise recorded $22.54 million in revenue during the eight months compared with the previous year’s higher result.

Planning a Siem Reap Cultural Holiday

Angkor still continues to be a good destination for cultural tourism heritage experiences in one particular area for tourists. It becomes possible to combine temples, museums, local markets, cultural activities, and various other places that are popular among tourists in Siem Reap. One has to take enough time in order to get from one monument to another because the archaeological park occupies large areas of land. The right type of shoes, sunscreen, water, and appropriate clothes will help visitors enjoy their sightseeing in Cambodian weather conditions. It is possible to visit the temples depending upon the preference of tourists and the time available to them. Tourists may visit famous monuments, whereas tourists interested in heritage may spend time at monuments that are less famous among others. Both Siem Reap and the archaeological park will provide tourists with a full cultural experience.

Transportation, accommodation, and restaurant services thrive on tourists coming to Angkor and need the involvement of tourists in order to make a living. In situations where foreign tourists have intentions of coming to Cambodia, Angkor Archaeological Park becomes one of the key destinations for tourists. While Siem Reap serves as the gateway to the temples, the whole tourist destination is filled with hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and other places of interest for tourists. The graph below shows the performance of Angkor Tourism for eight months. Further figures of tourism will show its performance for the rest of the year.
