Handling millions of pilgrims during Rath Yatra required extensive preparation well before the festival began. Multiple operational plans were developed to manage passenger movement, train scheduling, emergency situations and unexpected challenges caused by weather conditions.
The railway administration created a structured system where different teams were given specific responsibilities. Passenger service employees, technical teams, communication departments and security personnel worked together to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Special attention was given to crowd movement inside and around the railway station. Backup arrangements were also prepared to deal with sudden increases in passenger numbers and emergency situations.
This organised approach allowed railway operations to continue efficiently even as heavy rain affected the region and renovation work at the station was progressing simultaneously.
Technology became a key support system in managing the huge passenger volume during the festival.
The RailOne application helped pilgrims purchase tickets digitally through their mobile phones, reducing the need to wait at crowded ticket counters. Automatic Ticket Vending Machines and mobile unreserved ticketing services further improved passenger convenience and reduced congestion.
A modern command and control centre provided railway officials with real-time updates on passenger movement across the station. The system was connected to 220 CCTV cameras and 19 video walls, allowing authorities to monitor crowd density and quickly respond to developing congestion points.
The use of digital monitoring tools helped improve crowd control, making passenger movement safer and more organised during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Heavy rainfall during the Rath Yatra period created additional difficulties for travellers arriving in Puri. To protect passengers from the challenging weather, special temporary facilities were arranged at the railway station.
Large waterproof holding areas covering more than 16,000 square metres were created to provide shelter for devotees. Additional resting spaces spread across over 13,000 square metres allowed passengers to wait comfortably before continuing their journey.
Passenger support facilities were also expanded with the installation of 187 temporary toilets, 128 bathrooms and 103 urinals. Cleaning teams remained deployed throughout the festival to maintain hygiene and ensure better passenger experiences.
These arrangements provided essential support to thousands of pilgrims affected by heavy rainfall while waiting for trains.
To accommodate the increased passenger movement, additional railway resources were positioned along the Khurda Road–Puri section.
Extra train rakes were kept ready at strategic locations so additional services could be introduced whenever required. Two Amrit Bharat special trains were also operated during the festival to provide more travel options for devotees.
Emergency response services were strengthened as well. First-aid centres and ambulance facilities remained available at the station to support passengers needing medical assistance.
Approximately 13,000 pilgrims received medical support during the festival period, highlighting the importance of effective emergency arrangements during large-scale public gatherings.

The smooth handling of the massive Rath Yatra passenger movement was achieved through the combined efforts of railway employees across various departments.
From station management and passenger services to technical maintenance, security operations and emergency assistance, teams worked continuously to maintain safe and efficient railway services.
The operation became even more significant as it was carried out during a period of major station redevelopment and challenging weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, passenger movement remained controlled and organised.
The successful management of over 13 lakh devotees during Puri Rath Yatra reflects the growing ability of Indian Railways to handle large-scale passenger gatherings through better planning, technology integration and improved infrastructure.
The experience also highlights the importance of modern railway facilities and coordinated operations in supporting major cultural and religious events while delivering a safer travel experience for millions of passengers.
