Paint Dover 2026 Makes Delaware’s Capital a Colourful New Hub for Autumn Travel

Downtown Dover will become a large outdoor art studio this October. Paint Dover 2026 will bring artists, students, visitors and local businesses together from 7 to 10 October. The event will fill the streets of Delaware’s capital with colour, sketchbooks, easels and new ideas.
Paint Dover is an annual plein-air painting event and art competition. Plein air means painting outdoors. Artists do not sit inside a studio. They paint what they see around them. They will capture Dover’s old buildings, public spaces, streets, landmarks and daily life.
This makes the event different from a normal gallery show. Visitors will not only see finished paintings. They will see art being made in real time. A walk through Downtown Dover could lead to an artist painting a historic building, a quiet street corner or a busy public space.
The Downtown Dover Partnership is organising the four-day event. The Biggs Museum of American Art will host the final exhibition, awards and reception. Together, the two locations will connect Dover’s streets with one of the city’s leading art venues.

An Autumn Festival That Invites Visitors Into the Creative Process

The event begins on Wednesday, 7 October. Artists will register and prepare to paint across Downtown Dover. Registration and the event opening will take place from 8am to 10am, or by appointment, at the Downtown Dover Partnership in the CenDel Building at 101 West Loockerman Street.
Artists will continue checking in on Thursday, 8 October. They will then spend time painting across the downtown area. The event does not keep them in one place. This gives the festival a moving, open-air feeling. Visitors may find artists working in different parts of the city.
The first two days will help create the mood for the festival. Easels and artists will become part of the streetscape. The work will grow step by step as each painter creates a personal view of Dover.
The event welcomes artists from different backgrounds and experience levels. This includes full-event artists, college students and younger students. Middle and high school students can take part without a fee, although they need a chaperone aged 20 or above.

Friday Brings Workshops and New Skills

Friday, 9 October, will add learning to the live painting experience. The programme includes three workshops and artist demonstrations.
The first workshop, Creating Flowers in Watercolor, will run from 10am to noon. Rosemary Connelly will lead it. It will focus on watercolour techniques and floral subjects.
The second workshop, Art on the Go: Sketching with Watercolor, will take place from noon to 2pm. Rachel Van Wylen will lead the session. It will show how artists can sketch and paint while travelling or moving through a place.
The third workshop, Unleash Color and Light with Pastels, will run from 2pm to 4pm. Dennis Young will lead the session. It will explore how pastel artists use colour and light to make scenes feel alive.
These sessions make Paint Dover more than a competition. They create space for people to learn and try new skills. Visitors can watch artists working throughout downtown while registered participants can take part in the workshops.

Quick Draw Creates Saturday’s Main Moment

Saturday, 10 October, will be the biggest day of Paint Dover. The Biggs Museum of American Art at 406 Federal Street will become the centre of the action.
Quick Draw registration and check-in will begin from 9am to 10am. The Quick Draw competition will follow from 10am to noon. Artists will have only two hours to create a new original work in and around Downtown Dover.
This creates pressure, energy and excitement. Artists must choose a subject, work quickly and complete their painting before time ends. Visitors can follow the action and see how artists react to the challenge.
Judging will take place from noon to 2pm. Artists who want their work shown must have it set up at the Biggs Museum by 1pm. The Wet Paint Exhibit, awards and reception will then run from 2pm to 4pm.
The exhibit will show fresh work made during the event. It will give visitors a chance to see the finished paintings after watching the artists work outside. Some artwork may be available to buy, unless it is marked Not For Sale.

The Art Story Continues Into November

Paint Dover will not end when the awards reception closes. The Biggs Museum will host a wider Paint Dover exhibition from 1 October to 8 November 2026.
The exhibition will include selected work from past events and paintings created during the 2026 programme. This gives people another chance to experience the festival. Travellers who cannot visit during the four main days may still see selected art during October and early November.
The longer exhibition also helps the city keep the festival spirit alive. It gives Dover an autumn art attraction that lasts beyond one weekend.
