United States Aligns with Europe and Asia as American Express Adds Over One Million Airbnb Stays to Its Travel Platform

The United States, Europe and Asia could all feature in travellers’ holiday plans as American Express introduces a new way for eligible US cardholders to discover accommodation around the world. On October 22, 2026, American Express and Airbnb announced a partnership bringing more than one million Airbnb listings to Amex Travel, expanding the choices available through its booking platform. The move gives eligible customers another way to plan holidays, family reunions and luxury escapes while earning travel rewards.
More Holiday Homes Become Available Through Amex Travel
The partnership adds a wide range of accommodation to Amex Travel’s existing hotel portfolio. Travellers can explore city apartments, family houses, beach properties and premium private residences through the platform’s website or mobile application.

The expansion is significant because different trips call for different kinds of stays. A couple visiting a European city may prefer a compact apartment, while a family travelling across the United States might need several bedrooms and a kitchen. Groups celebrating special occasions may also value the privacy and space offered by a holiday home.
According to the companies, the new inventory includes more than one million listings worldwide. However, the arrangement does not mean that one million new properties have been created. Instead, it brings existing Airbnb accommodation into another booking channel for eligible American Express customers.

Travel Rewards Add Another Reason to Compare Bookings
The partnership also introduces a rewards incentive for eligible US cardholders enrolled in the Membership Rewards programme. Consumer and Business Platinum cardholders can earn five Membership Rewards points per dollar on qualifying prepaid Airbnb bookings made through Amex Travel. Other eligible Membership Rewards cardholders generally earn two points per dollar.
The rewards may appeal to travellers who already use American Express for their travel spending. However, points alone do not determine whether a reservation offers good value. Holidaymakers should compare the final price, taxes, cleaning charges, cancellation conditions and applicable rewards before choosing where to book.

The arrangement also involves two platforms. Customers begin their search through Amex Travel and follow the prompts to connect their American Express and Airbnb accounts. Reservations are completed through Airbnb, which remains responsible for stay management, including communication with hosts, booking changes, cancellations and accommodation-related support.
Luxury Stays Bring Additional Platinum Card Benefits
The partnership offers further benefits to eligible US Consumer and Business Platinum cardholders booking qualifying Airbnb Luxe properties.
Eligible prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of at least two nights can qualify for the existing annual $600 Lodging Credit, available as up to $300 in statement credits during each half of the year. The benefit was previously known as the Hotel Credit and is not an additional $600 on top of the existing allowance.
Eligible Platinum cardholders can also unlock access to a new annual Airbnb Experiences benefit worth up to $250 in statement credits after making a qualifying prepaid Airbnb Luxe booking through Amex Travel. Eligible Experiences purchases must be made directly through Airbnb and remain subject to the programme’s terms.
These offers could appeal to travellers planning premium holidays, although the credits are conditional and do not apply to every Airbnb property. Customers should check the eligibility requirements before making a reservation. Source: American Express
Europe’s Holiday Rental Market Shows the Wider Travel Opportunity
The development comes as short-term accommodation plays an important role in tourism across Europe. Data published by the UK Office for National Statistics recorded approximately 93.8 million guest nights in short-term lets across the United Kingdom between July 2024 and June 2025, an increase of 10.2% compared with the previous 12-month period.

The figures cover short-term rentals booked through Airbnb, Booking.com and Expedia Group, rather than Airbnb alone. They nevertheless demonstrate the scale of demand for alternative accommodation and help explain why travel companies are seeking to make these stays more accessible.
For destinations across Europe, a wider choice of accommodation can help visitors plan trips around their budgets, group sizes and preferred experiences. However, the benefits of rental growth must be balanced with local housing needs, safety requirements and regulations governing tourist accommodation.
India Highlights the Importance of Homestays Beyond Major Cities
In Asia, India provides another perspective on the growing role of alternative accommodation. The Ministry of Tourism has supported the development of the homestay sector, while Airbnb announced a two-year collaboration with the ministry in 2026 to strengthen hosting skills, digital onboarding and tourism opportunities in emerging destinations.
The initiative aims to help local entrepreneurs participate in tourism and encourage visitors to explore places beyond established hotspots. Homestays can offer travellers closer contact with local communities while creating opportunities for residents to earn income from tourism.
India’s initiative is separate from the American Express partnership, and the new US cardholder benefits should not be interpreted as automatically available to Indian cardholders. Still, both developments reflect a broader industry interest in making diverse accommodation options easier to discover and book.
What the Partnership Means for Future Travel Planning
For travellers, the most important change is the additional choice available through Amex Travel. The partnership brings traditional hotel bookings and a substantial selection of Airbnb stays closer together, while linking eligible reservations to a familiar rewards programme.

Whether this changes booking habits will depend on prices, property availability, benefits and the ease of managing a stay. For now, the announcement signals another step in the evolution of travel booking, where accommodation choice and loyalty incentives increasingly work together.
For someone planning a long-awaited family holiday or a quiet escape abroad, having more options can make the search feel less restrictive. The real value, however, will come from finding the right stay for the trip, understanding the booking conditions and choosing an option that makes both practical and financial sense.
