Barcelona Overtakes Amsterdam and More Destinations in Budget-Friendly Tourism Activities as Europe Travel Prices Climb
Barcelona beats Amsterdam on activity costs as prices for tours rise across Europe. The city has proven itself a more affordable option than Amsterdam and several other European destinations, with a median price for an experience of €95, compared to €138 in Amsterdam. The analysis of 461,760 offers for excursions, tickets to events and other activities around the world found big variations in what tourists can expect to pay for typical attractions in different destinations. The worldwide median price for an activity was €111, but there are cheaper options available in Europe, with prices across the region varying widely. Meanwhile, South-East Asia and North Africa were found to be even cheaper destinations for experiences.
The findings underline how activity costs can substantially change the overall price of a holiday. Accommodation and airfares are often considered first when travel budgets are prepared, but guided tours, attraction admissions, cruises, classes and day trips can add considerably to spending once travellers arrive. In cities where several paid experiences are booked during a stay, even a relatively small difference in median activity prices can result in a noticeably different holiday budget.

Barcelona Strengthens Its Position as an Affordable European Experience Hub
Among the major European cities assessed, Barcelona recorded a median activity price of €95, making it one of the most affordable large European tourism destinations included in the ranking. Around 2,900 activities were available in the city, giving visitors a broad selection while keeping typical prices below the worldwide median.
Barcelona was followed by Madrid at €107, while prices increased to €130 in Prague, €134 in Istanbul and €138 in Amsterdam. This means travellers selecting Barcelona instead of Amsterdam could face a median difference of about €43 for each booked activity, depending on the experience selected.

The difference becomes more significant when multiple activities are purchased. Visitors taking guided tours, attraction tickets and day excursions during a city break may therefore find Barcelona relatively favourable for discretionary tourism spending.
| Destination | Median Activity Price | Important Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | €95 | Around 2,900 activities |
| Madrid | €107 | Below global median |
| Prague | €130 | Moderate European pricing |
| Istanbul | €134 | Wide tourism experience market |
| Amsterdam | €138 | €43 above Barcelona |
| Rome | €165 | 7,898 activities |
| Lisbon | €169 | Higher activity costs |
| Venice | €169 | Similar level to Lisbon |
| Paris | €170 | Well above global median |
| Florence | €175 | Premium cultural experience market |
| Athens | €199 | Near €200 median |
| London | €202 | Among Europe’s costliest |
| Naples | €214 | More than twice Barcelona’s lower range |
| Sorrento | €279 | Particularly high median |
European Activity Prices Show a Striking Divide
A significant price gap has been revealed across Europe. While an activity in Barcelona carries a median of €95, the figure rises to €214 in Naples and €279 in Sorrento. The spread illustrates how tourism activity spending may effectively double or even triple depending on the destination.

Rome, meanwhile, has been positioned as one of Europe’s largest experience markets. Its median price stands at €165, but 7,898 activities were available, giving travellers one of the broadest selections on the continent.
Similar median prices were reported for Lisbon and Venice at €169, followed closely by Paris at €170 and Florence at €175. Prices approached or exceeded €200 in Athens at €199 and London at €202.
The figures indicate that European destinations cannot be treated as one single tourism price market. Considerable variation is being created by the type of experiences offered, local operating costs and the number of premium or longer-duration activities included in each destination.
South-East Asia Emerges as a Strong Value Region
Some of the lowest prices in the global comparison were recorded across South-East Asia, strengthening the region’s appeal for travellers seeking affordable experiences.
Ubud in Bali recorded the lowest median price at just €44. It was followed by Hoi An at €54, Seminyak at €59, Da Nang at €62 and Siem Reap at €63.
These prices sit far below both the €111 global median and most leading European cities. Travellers visiting such destinations may therefore be able to book several activities for roughly the price of one premium experience elsewhere.

The affordability of these markets is particularly important because experiences form a major part of tourism demand across South-East Asia. Cultural visits, countryside excursions, local tours, heritage experiences and day trips can often form a substantial portion of a traveller’s itinerary.
Egypt Also Stands Out for Low-Cost Tourism Activities
Egypt has also been identified as one of the world’s most competitively priced destinations for organised tourism experiences.
Hurghada recorded a median price of €52, placing it among the least expensive cities included in the analysis. More notably, over one-third of activities in Hurghada were priced below €30, creating significant opportunities for budget-conscious travellers.
Cairo recorded a median of €71, while also offering the largest number of activities in the entire ranking, with 9,881 experiences. This combination of extensive choice and relatively low pricing gives Cairo a particularly strong position in the global attractions and excursions market.
Nearby Marrakech, another major North African tourism destination, recorded a similar median price of €70.
Safari and Trekking Destinations Push Median Costs Sharply Higher
At the opposite end of the ranking, some destinations recorded exceptionally high activity prices. However, these figures should not automatically be interpreted as meaning that ordinary attractions are unusually expensive.

Arusha in Tanzania recorded a median activity price of €1,366, the highest among the destinations highlighted. Nairobi reached €467, while Kathmandu stood at €442.
These elevated prices are being driven largely by the presence of multi-day safaris, trekking packages and extended excursions. Such products include more services and last considerably longer than a standard museum ticket or short city tour, naturally pushing median prices upward.
This distinction is important when destination prices are compared. An activity marketplace dominated by multi-day expeditions cannot be directly compared with one where short walking tours and attraction admissions account for most listings.
Kathmandu and New Delhi Lead Traveller Satisfaction
Price was not the only factor examined. Traveller satisfaction was also assessed using activities that had received at least ten reviews.
Kathmandu achieved the highest average rating at 4.94 out of 5, despite having one of the highest median activity prices. New Delhi followed closely at 4.93, with Arusha at 4.92.
Both Ubud and Siem Reap achieved 4.91, demonstrating that lower-priced destinations can also deliver some of the strongest traveller satisfaction scores.

At the other end, Paris recorded 4.61, while Cancún stood at 4.47, the lowest rating among the destinations specifically highlighted.
These findings suggest that high prices do not necessarily guarantee stronger customer satisfaction. Equally, affordable destinations can perform extremely well when travellers assess the quality of their experiences.
What the Global Activity Ranking Means for Travellers
The comparison shows that the cost of experiences should increasingly be considered when complete holiday budgets are calculated. Travellers comparing two destinations may find similar accommodation or transport costs but face very different spending requirements once tours and attractions are added.
For European city breaks, Barcelona’s €95 median provides a notable advantage over destinations such as Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, London and Naples. For those seeking even greater value, destinations across South-East Asia, Egypt and North Africa provide substantially lower median activity costs.
At the same time, travellers should examine what each price represents. A €40 attraction ticket and a €1,000 multi-day safari cannot be assessed on price alone because their duration, inclusions and travel experience are fundamentally different.
How the Ranking Was Calculated
The analysis was based on 461,760 activities available across the world’s major tourism destinations. Prices were recorded in euros on 3 October 2026 and represented displayed “from” prices for activities including guided tours, attraction tickets, day trips, cruises and classes.

The 50 cities offering the largest numbers of activities were then ranked, with the median price for each city being calculated. Average traveller ratings were measured only for activities that had accumulated at least ten reviews, helping reduce the influence of experiences with very limited feedback.
Barcelona Surpasses Amsterdam in Activity Costs Amid Rising European Tour Prices.
In comparison to Amsterdam, Barcelona offers a more affordable experience with its low median activity cost, which is significantly lower than the prices offered by Amsterdam. Thus, it provides a larger variety of options for tourists searching for tours, attractions, and day trips within their spending limits. In general, the results of the analysis highlight the state of the global tourism market, which offers a wide range of activities for visitors with various budgets. Despite the high level of tourism development in the European Union, represented by Amsterdam, other destinations provide excellent opportunities in terms of both quality and cost. In particular, the options available in South-East Asia and Egypt are associated with significantly lower prices.
