America’s overnight trains are making a quiet return to the travel conversation. They offer beds, dining cars and long views instead of short flights, airport queues and rushed connections. For smaller US cities, this may create a new tourism chance. Visitors can arrive in the morning and walk straight into a town centre, a hotel, a hot spring, a mountain area or a historic street. Yet one hard question remains. Are night trains truly bringing more international visitors, longer hotel stays and higher local spending? The early evidence is promising, but it does not yet give a clear yes.
Amtrak launched the Floridian in November 2024. The service links Chicago and Miami through cities including Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Washington, Orlando and Tampa. It combines parts of the Capitol Limited and Silver Star routes. The train was created as a temporary answer to work on New York’s East River Tunnel. Still, it gave passengers a direct long-distance rail option that had not existed in this form before.
The route has created a real tourism test. A traveller can leave Chicago, sleep on the train and reach Pittsburgh, Florida or other stops without taking a short domestic flight. This matters for overseas visitors too. Many international travellers land first in gateway cities such as New York, Chicago, Miami or Los Angeles. They may then need another flight to reach a smaller destination. A sleeper train can remove that extra airport journey.
However, the Floridian is not yet proof of a tourism boom. Public data do not show how many passengers are international visitors. The figures also do not show how many stayed in hotels near stations or spent money in local shops and restaurants. The route is an important experiment, but the answer will need more time and better data.

Pittsburgh is one of the most interesting cities on the Floridian route. It is not a small town, but it acts like a major stop between large gateway cities and smaller destinations. The city already has museums, sports, food, river views and old industrial areas that attract leisure visitors.
The wider Pittsburgh tourism economy reported $6.4 billion in impact in 2023. Visitor spending also rose 6.1% from the previous year. These are strong results. But they do not prove that overnight rail caused the growth. Big events, business trips, sports matches and meetings also fill hotels and bring spending.
Pittsburgh needs to study its station area closely. Hotels near Union Station and the Strip District could track guests who arrive by Amtrak. They could compare room demand before and after the Floridian began. They could also ask guests where they came from and whether they would otherwise have flown. This would show whether the train is changing travel habits or simply giving existing visitors another way to arrive.
Whitefish in Montana gives the clearest small-town example. The Empire Builder links the town with Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Seattle and Portland. It has sleeper accommodation and connects visitors with Glacier National Park and the Rocky Mountains.
Whitefish has long been a popular place for outdoor tourism. Its visitor economy has been valued at more than $143 million. Hotels are busy in summer, but quieter periods remain a challenge. Traditional hotel occupancy averaged 54.2% in the 2023–24 financial year. Summer demand can be strong, while late autumn can be much weaker.
This is where the night-train idea becomes more powerful. A visitor can board in a large city, sleep while travelling and wake near Montana’s mountain scenery. The train may help fill rooms outside the busiest season. It may also support visitors who do not want to rent a car immediately.
But Whitefish cannot say that its sleeper train is new. The Empire Builder has served the area for many years. The better story is whether an established night train can protect tourism when flight costs rise, roads become busy or visitors seek a slower and more scenic journey.

Glenwood Springs in Colorado may offer one of the best rail-to-tourism connections in the country. The California Zephyr links Chicago, Denver, Glenwood Springs and the San Francisco Bay Area. Visitors can travel overnight and arrive close to the town’s famous hot springs, canyon scenery, restaurants and outdoor activities.
The station is important because it is close to the visitor experience. A traveller does not need to land at a distant airport and then spend hours driving. This makes Glenwood Springs a strong example of a car-light holiday.
Colorado welcomed huge visitor spending in 2024. Overnight visitors to the state spent $17.6 billion, even though the figure was slightly lower than the previous year. Glenwood Springs also uses a 2.5% lodging tax to support tourism promotion and development. This shows how overnight stays matter directly to the local economy.
Yet the town still needs clearer local evidence. It must compare hotel room nights, visitor spending and station arrivals over several years. It also needs to find out whether travellers from abroad are using rail after arriving in Denver or San Francisco. Without this, the rail effect remains possible but unproven.
Flagstaff in Arizona sits on Amtrak’s Southwest Chief route between Chicago and Los Angeles. The train has sleeping cars and gives passengers a way to reach northern Arizona without another flight. Flagstaff is also a key base for Grand Canyon trips, forest walks, dark-sky tourism and Route 66 travel.
The city already has a large visitor economy. Its tourism body says visitors usually stay for about three nights. Previous estimates put annual tourism impact at around $750 million. This shows that Flagstaff can hold visitors for more than a quick day trip.
The challenge is to prove that rail visitors stay longer than road or air visitors. A traveller arriving by sleeper may be more likely to stay overnight because the journey is slower and part of the holiday itself. Hotels, local attractions and rail operators could work together to measure this. They could create packages that include a room, a local tour and train travel.
Charlottesville in Virginia is another strong candidate. The Crescent route offers overnight travel between New York, Washington, Charlottesville, Atlanta and New Orleans. The city’s station sits close to the centre, which gives visitors easy access to hotels, restaurants, historic sites and the university area.
Charlottesville and Albemarle recorded nearly $989.8 million in visitor spending in 2024. The sector also generated major local tax income. These figures show the value of visitors who sleep, eat and explore in the region.
The city could become a leading test case because it is easy to explore without a car. International visitors who arrive in New York or Washington may find rail simpler than a short domestic flight. Still, the city must separate rail demand from university events, weddings, festivals and weekend leisure trips.
America’s night trains are not yet a proven answer to international tourism growth. But they are opening a new path. They can help travellers move beyond airport gateways, stay longer and spend more in smaller places. The next big story will depend on the data. If towns can prove that sleepers fill hotel rooms and support local businesses, night trains may become one of the most exciting tourism tools in the United States.
