Netherlands joins UK and more major European markets, including Germany and France, in driving Spain’s hotel demand as prices jump 6.7% year on year in September 2026. INE’s figures show these four countries accounted for just over 56% of foreign hotel nights, demonstrating their importance to Spain’s accommodation market. Yet September’s average room revenue was about 15.2% below August’s level. For travellers, this combination of annual inflation and seasonal price differences makes timing, destination and the complete cost of a stay central to finding value.

Spain Hotel Prices: Understand the Increase Before Setting Your Budget

The headline’s 6.7% compares September 2026 with September 2025. It measures hotel prices across different customers and booking channels.

A separate indicator, average daily room revenue, or ADR, reached €141.61, up 7.41% annually. This is accommodation revenue per occupied room; it is not a current booking quote or the cost per person. These figures appear in INE’s September statistical tables.

Demand also split in two directions. Spain recorded 40.16 million hotel nights. Stays by residents abroad increased 3.2%, while those by Spanish residents fell 1.9%.

The useful reading is that overseas guests supported growth while domestic demand softened. Those totals alone cannot identify why an individual hotel raised its rates.

September’s 15.2% Rate Gap Shows Why Timing Still Matters

August’s national ADR was €166.90, compared with €141.61 in September. The difference was €25.29 per occupied room, or roughly 15.2%, calculated from INE’s monthly figures.

These averages combine different hotels, destinations and guests. They do not measure the same room becoming cheaper.

Still, they give flexible travellers a reason to test alternative dates. Start with the hotel and room type you actually want. Then price several possible stays, keeping the guest count and cancellation terms unchanged.

Check flights at the same time. A lower hotel total loses its advantage if the alternative departure costs more. Your useful comparison is the combined journey, not either component in isolation.

Why Visitors from Netherlands, UK, Germany and France Matter

These four European markets generated 15.86 million hotel nights in September. Their shares show the scale of their contribution to Spain’s hotel economy.

Country of residenceSeptember hotel nightsShare of foreign nights
UK7,708,34827.23%
Germany4,926,65217.41%
France1,938,1326.85%
Netherlands1,288,5274.55%

Their combined share was 56.04% of foreign nights and 39.50% of all hotel nights, including domestic stays, calculated from INE’s underlying counts.

The Dutch figures add another insight: 1,288,527 nights from 286,240 hotel guest arrivals works out at approximately 4.5 nights per hotel arrival, calculated from the same data. For accommodation demand, duration matters alongside the number of visiting guests.

Compare Spain’s Regions Before You Compare Individual Hotels

September’s national average concealed large differences in both achieved room rates and occupancy.

RegionAverage revenue per occupied roomRoom occupancy
Community of Madrid€186.6579.83%
Balearic Islands€176.8190.20%
Andalusia€139.7475.54%
Canary Islands€136.1984.99%
Catalonia€135.2778.37%
Valencian Community€120.6379.62%

Madrid’s figure covers the autonomous community. All figures describe September’s observed averages.

The Balearics had around nine in ten available rooms occupied, compared with 78.17% nationally. That makes “quieter after summer” an unreliable description of every destination.

The Canaries offer another useful distinction: high occupancy coexisted with an ADR below the national average. Busyness and price level are separate signals.

Choose the region that suits your holiday first. Then compare specific properties. A cheaper regional average provides little value if changing destinations adds unwanted journeys or removes the experiences you wanted.

Fewer Hotel Stars Do Not Always Mean a Lower Bill

September’s category averages provide a starting point:

  • Five-star hotels: €332.75 per occupied room.
  • Four-star hotels: €144.31.
  • Three-star hotels: €115.56.

The less obvious finding sits further down the scale. One-star hotels averaged €93.59, slightly above the €91.96 recorded for two-star hotels in INE’s category breakdown.

That does not make one-star hotels inherently more expensive. Different locations and properties shape each average. It shows why star ratings cannot serve as a dependable price ladder.

Build a shortlist around the facilities you need. Compare the final payable total for matching dates, room occupancy, meals and flexibility. Higher average revenue does not, by itself, demonstrate better service.

UK Visitor Spending Shows Why Daily Costs Need Their Own Budget

August’s spending figures add context to the hotel story. UK visitors spent an average of €198 per person per day, up 6.9% annually. Their average trip shortened 7.9% to 7.1 days, while average spending per tourist fell 1.6% to €1,396.

A smaller total trip bill can therefore coexist with more expensive days.

These figures do not prove that hotel inflation caused shorter stays. They do show why a holiday budget needs two checks: how much each day costs, and how many days the total can support.

Keep the units separate. Tourism spending is measured per person; hotel ADR is measured per occupied room.

More Airline Seats Do Not Set Your Hotel Price

Turespaña’s October 2026 capacity outlook recorded 12.76 million planned international seats to Spain, up 6.4%. The schedules were recorded on 24 September.

Growth varied across the four markets: UK capacity rose 6.8%, Germany 5.3% and the Netherlands 0.1%, while France fell 2.2%. These were scheduled seats, subject to airline changes. They were not confirmed arrivals or hotel reservations.

Use the outlook as background. For your trip, check a workable flight and an acceptable room together before paying for either. National capacity growth cannot guarantee a lower fare or availability at your chosen resort.

Find Spain Hotel Value in the Complete Stay

Make your final comparison easy to check:

  • Match the basics: same dates, guests, nights and room requirements.
  • Add the extras: applicable taxes, breakfast, parking and services you expect to use.
  • Price the location: include transfers, local transport and time spent travelling.
  • Read the flexibility: compare cancellation deadlines, deposits and change conditions.
  • Check the full total: distinguish prices per person, per room and per night.

For illustration, a €10 difference in the quoted nightly room price changes a seven-night room bill by €70, assuming the other charges stay the same.

A well-located hotel or an included meal can alter that comparison. Choose the stay that protects both your budget and the time you want to enjoy in Spain.

What to compareWhat to checkWhy it matters
Stay detailsSame dates, number of guests, nights and room requirements.Keeps your comparison fair.
Extra chargesApplicable taxes, breakfast, parking and services you will use.Shows the cost beyond the advertised room rate.
LocationAirport transfers, local transport and journey times.Helps protect both your budget and holiday time.
Booking flexibilityCancellation deadlines, deposits and change conditions.Clarifies the cost if your plans change.
Complete priceWhether the price is per person, per room, per night or for the entire stay.Makes the final payable totals easier to compare.

In conclusion, with more than half of foreign hotel nights generated by visitors from four key markets, the Netherlands joins the UK, Germany and France in driving Spain’s hotel demand as prices jump 6.7% year on year in September 2026. Yet lower average room revenue than in August shows why travel dates still matter. Compare suitable destinations, matching room offers and the full cost of flights, meals and transfers. Choose the stay that gives your budget the best balance of location, comfort and flexibility, while protecting the time you want to enjoy in Spain.
