Tourism in Ghana increased its economic strength in 2025, with the number of international visitors hitting 1,306,962, and tourism earnings estimated at US$4.34 billion. The new figures, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and Information Services Department of Ghana, reflect continued growth in international tourism, domestic tourism, and Ghana’s licensed tourism industry.

The new figures also give insight into the period of time for which the headline performance has been achieved. International tourists increased from 1,288,804 in 2024 to 1,306,962 in 2025, ensuring that Ghana remains above the one million mark for tourist arrivals and an important tourism destination in West Africa. The new figures follow up on a trend of growth that was already visible in 2024, when Ghana experienced a 12% increase in international tourist arrivals. Official statistics indicate that Ghana had 1,148,002 international tourists in 2023, increasing to 1,288,804 in 2024.

How Did Ghana Turn 1.31 Million International Arrivals into US$4.34 Billion?

The central figure in Ghana’s latest tourism assessment is the estimated US$4.34 billion generated from international tourist arrivals during 2025. This is important because tourism performance cannot be assessed through visitor numbers alone. The economic value generated by accommodation, transportation, attractions, tour operations, entertainment, retail activity and other visitor spending determines how strongly tourism feeds into the wider national economy.

Ghana’s official medium-term tourism planning documents describe the sector as an important source of foreign-exchange earnings, employment and investment, identifying tourism as the country’s fourth-largest foreign-exchange earner after gold, cocoa and oil. The same government planning document recorded around US$3.81 billion in tourism revenue from 1.15 million international arrivals in 2023.

The 2025 estimate of US$4.34 billion therefore indicates that Ghana is continuing to extract substantial economic value from its international visitor market. Official statistics should nevertheless be read according to their individual methodologies. The Ghana Statistical Service’s International Travellers’ Survey, for example, measured 901,448 inbound visitors between the final quarter of 2022 and third quarter of 2023 and estimated their expenditure at GHS15.42 billion. That survey established a statistical baseline using a different period and methodology, meaning it should not be treated as directly interchangeable with the latest US-dollar tourism revenue estimate.

Why Does the 2025 Result Matter for Ghana’s Tourism Recovery?

Ghana entered 2025 with significant momentum. The country’s official 2024 Tourism Report recorded 1,288,804 international arrivals, compared with 1,148,002 in 2023. The annual increase represented growth of approximately 12%. By reaching 1,306,962 international arrivals in 2025, Ghana maintained that recovery and moved beyond the previous year’s total rather than surrendering the gains made after the pandemic disruption. The long-term comparison is also significant. Ghana received 1,130,307 international arrivals in 2019, when the country’s high-profile tourism campaigns helped increase global attention. Government planning data show that tourism generated more than US$3.3 billion that year.

This means the latest arrival total has moved above the pre-pandemic benchmark, while estimated tourism revenue has also surpassed the level recorded in 2019. Ghana’s tourism proposition is centred on culture, heritage, diaspora travel, festivals, nature, business tourism and urban experiences. Government tourism policy is also seeking to diversify the industry into areas including conference, medical, eco and adventure tourism, reducing dependence on a narrow range of visitor products.

Which International Markets Are Important to Ghana’s Visitor Economy?

Although the latest government announcement does not provide a complete 2025 source-market breakdown, earlier official data demonstrate the importance of several established inbound markets. In 2024, the United States was Ghana’s largest of its three leading source markets, generating 137,862 arrivals. Nigeria followed with 111,581 visitors, while the United Kingdom contributed 52,845. The United States has become particularly important because of Ghana’s long-running focus on African diaspora tourism and Pan-African heritage experiences. The Ghana Tourism Authority has used programmes including Panafest, the Year of Return and Beyond the Return in its international destination promotion.

Nigeria also represents an important regional market. Official data show Nigerian arrivals increased substantially in 2024, strengthening cross-border demand within West Africa. Meanwhile, growing air connectivity continues to support Ghana’s international positioning. The Ghana Tourism Authority highlighted the launch of the seasonal Accra–Atlanta air service in December 2025 as an opportunity to deepen links with the United States and provide additional access for diaspora, leisure and business travellers.

Domestic Tourism Is Becoming Another Powerful Growth Engine

International travellers represent only one side of Ghana’s tourism expansion. Official figures show domestic tourism visits increased from approximately 1.68 million in 2024 to 1.79 million in 2025, representing growth of around 7%. That expansion is important because a stronger domestic market helps attractions, accommodation providers and tourism businesses generate demand outside periods dominated by international visitors.

The country’s ten most visited attractions collectively welcomed 1,377,588 visitors during 2025, accounting for approximately 77% of domestic tourism site visits nationwide. Among those attractions were Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Kakum National Park, Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle, Manhyia Palace, Shai Hills Resource Reserve, Aburi Botanical Gardens, Kumasi Zoo, Accra Zoo and Bonsu Arboretum/Eco Park. These sites underline the diversity of Ghana’s tourism portfolio. Visitors can move between historic forts and castles, cultural landmarks, wildlife attractions, forests, botanical sites and urban heritage experiences.

Hospitality and Travel Businesses Are Expanding Alongside Visitor Demand

Growth has also occurred across Ghana’s formal tourism business ecosystem. The number of licensed tourism enterprises increased from 6,702 in 2024 to 7,109 in 2025, representing growth of 6.1%. Licensed accommodation establishments increased from 5,210 to 5,424, while licensed food, beverage and entertainment establishments rose from 814 to 881.

The strongest increase occurred within the travel trade, where licensed enterprises rose from 678 to 804, an annual expansion of 18.6%. This category includes businesses supporting tour operations, travel planning, destination services and other visitor activities. The figures suggest that tourism growth is not confined to airport arrival statistics. Capacity within the commercial visitor economy is expanding as more businesses become part of Ghana’s regulated tourism network. That development can support employment while increasing the availability of accommodation, organised experiences, tour services and other products required by international and domestic travellers.

How Is Ghana Using Digital and Night Tourism to Broaden Visitor Spending?

Ghana is also attempting to extend tourism beyond traditional daytime sightseeing. One emerging product is Accra by Night, developed as a structured night-time tourism experience linked to restaurants, artists, transport services and smaller businesses. During the December 2025 festive season, Accra by Night generated approximately 93% of revenue recorded through the Ghana Tourism Marketplace, according to the government’s latest tourism update.

The Ghana Tourism Marketplace forms part of a broader digital push intended to enable travellers to discover and book verified experiences online. The Ghana Tourism Authority has continued this technology-driven strategy in 2026, including the introduction of the Ghana Tourism Information System and a new Experience Ghana digital tourism campaign. Together, these initiatives show how Ghana is seeking to convert visitor interest into measurable tourism spending while distributing economic activity among accommodation businesses, attractions, tour operators, transport providers and creative-sector enterprises.

Ghana’s US$4.34 Billion Result Signals a Broader Tourism Opportunity

The 1,306,962 international tourist arrivals and $4.34 billion tourism income in 2025 show the sustained growth of Ghana’s tourism economy since the pandemic period. This is further confirmed by 1.79 million domestic tourist arrivals, increasing numbers of licensed hospitality and tourism businesses, high performances of popular destinations and development of digital and nighttime tourism products. What needs to be done next is to extend the achievements geographically and economically. The official development strategy of Ghana recognizes improvements in infrastructure, destination management, service standards and diversification into other tourism markets as priorities for future development.

In terms of experiences for tourists, Ghana’s growing tourism economy will offer more organized tours centered on heritage, culture, nature, diaspora links and modern urban life. For Ghana itself, growing tourism will ensure increased foreign exchange earnings, economic activity and employment. The $4.34 billion tourism figure thus becomes more than just a revenue figure. It is an indication of a developing tourism economy that seeks to translate Ghana’s cultural and natural resources into economic growth.
