ALTA Aviation Law Americas Conference 2026 Opens New Chapter for Aviation Regulations Across Latin America and the Caribbean

The aviation legal community gathered in Miami for the ALTA Aviation Law Americas Conference 2026, an annual forum hosted by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), to examine the major regulatory, operational, and legal challenges shaping the future of the aviation industry.

The conference welcomed aviation law specialists, airline leaders, legal advisors, international institutions, and industry stakeholders from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. Discussions focused on the rapidly changing environment facing airlines and the wider air transport sector, with experts addressing several critical areas, including:

• Global geopolitics and regulatory challenges: Participants explored how international sanctions are affecting airline operations, the importance of cross-border cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment, and the growing influence of passenger protection rules such as the European Union’s EU261 compensation framework on international aviation.
• Market competition, trade, and financial regulations: Sessions examined the evolving legal framework surrounding trade policies and tariffs in the United States, taxation challenges within Brazil’s aviation market, and progress in applying the Cape Town Convention to strengthen aircraft financing and leasing systems across the region.
• Technology, digital transformation, and innovation: The conference highlighted emerging legal issues linked to the future of aviation technology, including the FAA’s regulatory approach to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), drone operations in cargo transportation, international e-commerce developments, and potential legal challenges connected to the use of artificial intelligence in passenger services.
• Operational risks and crisis response: Industry experts reviewed real aviation cases involving disruptive passengers, examining legal responsibilities, enforcement difficulties, and lessons for airlines. Discussions also covered liability concerns surrounding the adoption of automated systems and advanced digital tools in airline operations.

The event served as a platform for aviation professionals to exchange knowledge, address emerging risks, and identify legal strategies to support a safer, more innovative, and resilient air transport sector across the Americas and beyond.
