Aloha Tower’s 100-Year Legacy Brings Honolulu’s Maritime Heritage into Focus

A century of maritime history will be celebrated at Aloha Tower, which first opened on 11 September 1926 at Pier 9 in Honolulu Harbor. Standing 184 feet tall across 10 storeys, the landmark remained Hawaii’s tallest structure for approximately four decades.

During the historic Boat Days era, arriving passengers were welcomed by the word “ALOHA” displayed prominently on the tower’s exterior. The building became closely associated with Hawaii’s hospitality and its connections to the wider Pacific.

During the Second World War, the tower was painted in camouflage and used as a military control centre for Pacific convoys. It was later returned to civilian use.

The anniversary places Hawaii Tourism in the context of maritime heritage, offering visitors an opportunity to discover a landmark that has witnessed generations of harbour activity.

$8.5 Million Restoration Supports Aloha Tower’s Next Chapter

Ahead of its centennial, Aloha Tower has undergone an $8.5 million rehabilitation programme to preserve the building and improve visitor facilities.

The completed non-structural improvements have included elevator replacement, fire suppression upgrades, air-conditioning repairs and exterior repainting.

The observation floor has also received accessibility modifications, improved lighting, new signage and updated restroom fixtures. Mast cable supports for the lanai have been upgraded.

Further improvements are planned after the celebrations, including the replacement of 84 windows and the tower’s mast. Additional renovations will cover the third through eighth floors, supported by a $2 million federal grant.

Most completed improvements were financed through Harbor Special Revenue Funds. Approximately $1 million was also provided through the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s historic preservation fund for exterior repairs and painting.

The restoration forms an important part of preserving the waterfront landmark for future public use.

Why the Centennial Matters for Hawaii Tourism and Honolulu Harbor

The centennial is being used to highlight the connection between Hawaii’s visitor economy, its maritime heritage and the essential operations of Honolulu Harbor.

According to the transportation department, nearly 90% of goods consumed by residents and visitors pass through the harbour. Its importance therefore extends beyond tourism and historical sightseeing.

Through the restored viewing facilities, the public will be given an opportunity to observe the maritime operations supporting the islands’ everyday needs.

The combination of free admission, historical displays and cultural entertainment makes the centennial particularly relevant to visitors seeking heritage experiences in Honolulu.

The celebration also places attention on the preservation of historic waterfront infrastructure.

Conclusion

The Aloha Tower Centennial Celebration will bring Hawaii’s maritime past into focus through free public events, cultural performances and the reopening of a historic viewing platform. Scheduled for 15 and 16 October 2026, the celebrations will combine waterfront entertainment with opportunities to learn about Honolulu Harbor and its importance to island life.

For Hawaii Tourism, the anniversary highlights the value of preserving landmarks that connect visitors with local history. With restoration work continuing beyond the centennial, Aloha Tower will remain an important part of Honolulu’s waterfront heritage, offering future generations a place to appreciate the city’s maritime identity.
