The Australian Department of Home Affairs has introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa, a new initiative replacing the Temporary Skills Shortage Visa. This program is divided into three tailored pathways: the Specialist Skills Pathway, Core Skills Pathway, and Essential Skills Pathway.
The Core Skills Pathway is designed for workers earning between AUD 70,000 and AUD 135,000 annually. It features a refreshed list of 456 high-demand occupations across key sectors such as healthcare, education, construction, agriculture, and technology. The roles range from cooks and dog trainers to software engineers and healthcare professionals.
To support the SID Visa, the government has launched the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which consolidates essential roles to address labor shortages in line with Australia’s workforce needs. This list is based on extensive labor market research and stakeholder consultations, demonstrating a commitment to updating and enhancing the country’s migration framework.

Additionally, the CSOL will apply to the Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa, simplifying migration pathways. This approach is part of a broader effort by the Australian government to improve flexibility and responsiveness in skilled migration policies, replacing outdated occupation lists.
Indian migrants, who play a vital role in Australia’s skilled workforce, are expected to benefit from tech-related positions included in the updated list, such as software engineers and cybersecurity specialists. However, the exclusion of certain professions, like market research analysts, may lead some aspiring migrants to reconsider their eligibility and career plans.
