Austrian Airlines is launching its inaugural long-haul flight using the new Dreamliner Boeing 787-9 today at 4:55 p.m. This first flight, under the registration OE-LPL and flight number OS87, is destined for JFK Airport in New York. “The Dreamliner lives up to its name, turning dreams into reality. We are excited to offer our passengers a blend of Austrian hospitality and innovative comfort starting from today,” stated Michael Trestl, CCO of Austrian Airlines.

As passengers step aboard, they are greeted by the Boeing 787’s welcoming and spacious cabin. The Dreamliner can accommodate 294 passengers across three classes: 26 in Business Class, 21 in Premium Economy, and 247 in Economy Class. Business Class travelers can relax in sizable seats that convert into lie-flat beds, enjoy direct aisle access, ample storage, and raised seat side panels for added privacy.

The Dreamliner enhances travel across all classes with features like larger overhead compartments for added space and comfort, an innovative lighting system that adjusts to passengers’ biorhythms to mitigate jet lag, and quieter engines for a more peaceful journey.

Moreover, the Boeing 787 boasts the largest windows in the aviation industry, allowing even middle-seat passengers a horizon view. Electronic dimming lets passengers adjust the light to their preference while enjoying spectacular views.

Additionally, Austrian Airlines is rolling out complimentary FlyNet messaging on its intercontinental Dreamliner flights, available in all classes. For extended connectivity, passengers can opt for paid WiFi packages: FlyNet Premium for two hours at 15 euros or a full-flight package for 25 euros. HON Circle Members receive complimentary access to FlyNet Premium on these flights.

A New Era Aloft with Austrian Elegance

The latest addition to the Austrian Airlines fleet, the Dreamliner, offers passengers a unique blend of comfort, culinary excellence, and traditional Austrian hospitality. Aboard the Dreamliner, travelers can savor the “Tastefully Austrian” long-haul menu, distinctly superior to offerings on other airlines. Business Class passengers enjoy exquisite meals prepared by DO & CO Flying Chefs and experience the charm of a Viennese coffee house in the sky, while those in Premium Economy and Economy have various menu options to choose from.

Launching a New Chapter with the OE-LPL

2024 marks a pivotal year for Austrian Airlines as it introduces the OE-LPL, spearheading the modernization of its long-haul fleet. Over the next four years, ten Boeing 787-9s will progressively replace older models, signifying growth and enhanced international competitiveness for Austrian Airlines. Annette Mann, CEO of Austrian Airlines, highlights this fleet expansion as a crucial advancement for Austria’s economy, Vienna’s hub, and the airline’s future prospects.

“Austrian Airlines is the most important airline at Vienna Airport which accounts for close to half our passenger volume. The deployment of the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner by our home carrier represents a milestone in the history of the airline and the airport. The expansion of the long-haul fleet enables Austrian Airlines to boost its business and long-haul flight offering from Vienna. North America is at the forefront of Vienna Airport’s long-haul flight service. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner adds greater capacity and new flight connections to the USA. This is also a strong signal of growth for Vienna as an aviation hub”, says Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, in congratulating Austrian Airlines on the successful start of the Dreamliner.

Environmental Benefits of the Boeing 787

The introduction of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner reflects Austrian Airlines’ commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability. The aircraft’s advanced technology, lighter weight, superior aerodynamics, and modern engines allow for a fuel consumption reduction of up to 20% compared to the Boeing 767, thereby decreasing CO2 emissions. Another new Dreamliner, registered as OE-LPM, is scheduled for its maiden flight to Chicago soon, further enhancing the fleet’s eco-friendly credentials.

A Festive Welcome at Vienna Airport

Before taking to the skies, passengers boarding the OE-LPL will experience a festive gate event at Vienna Airport, led by key Austrian Airlines executives including CEO Annette Mann and COO Francesco Sciortino. The event features a photo wall, 787-themed gifts, and a selection of gourmet Austrian cuisine, setting the stage for an elevated travel experience with the new “Servus in the air.”
