Maui’s helicopter tourism sector is entering a new phase as travellers increasingly seek immersive, personalised and highly shareable experiences beyond traditional sightseeing. From towering waterfalls and rugged coastlines to volcanic landscapes and remote valleys inaccessible by road, aerial tours offer a perspective of the Hawaiian island that ground-based travel cannot match.
Bryan Kroten, Vice President of Marketing at Maverick Helicopters, says social media has played a major role in reshaping guest expectations over the past decade, with travellers now looking for memorable experiences designed to be both immersive and visually compelling. At the same time, safety, pilot expertise, comfort and operational standards remain central to the industry. With Maverick requiring pilots to have at least 1,500 flight hours and maintaining a long-standing focus on training and maintenance, Maui’s aerial tourism market is positioning itself for continued growth as international travel rebounds and new visitors discover the island from above.
Maui’s helicopter tourism industry has changed significantly over the past decade, largely driven by social media. Travellers now expect a shareable, high-quality experience, rather than simply a scenic “tour”. We’ve embraced that shift by providing a more immersive experience overall.
There is also a growing trend towards customisable experiences, so we have expanded our private charter and experience options to give travellers greater flexibility.

Travelling Maui by helicopter opens up so much of the island that simply cannot be seen from the ground. Whether it’s skyscraper-sized waterfalls, breathtaking shorelines or intimate views of the volcano, helicopters allow travellers to experience the island in its entirety from a unique perspective.
Safety is Maverick Helicopters’ top priority, supported by our maintenance standards, flight operations protocols and pilot training. Maverick Helicopters has received the FAA’s Diamond Award of Excellence for more than 15 consecutive years, recognising our ongoing commitment to maintenance and training standards.
One thing unique to Maverick in the Hawaiian Islands is that our pilots personally meet each guest in the terminal and escort them to the helicopter. For many guests, this is their first time in a helicopter, and having the rotor stopped rather than spinning during boarding is a small detail that makes a big difference in how safe and comfortable they feel.
Maverick Helicopters hires only experienced pilots to fly our fleet of Airbus H130 helicopters, aircraft purpose-built for sightseeing. Hawaii’s terrain and weather present some of the biggest challenges in flying, since conditions can shift quickly and vary significantly across the islands.
That’s why we require a minimum of 1,500 flight hours, giving our pilots the experience needed to navigate those conditions safely. Beyond flight experience, our pilots also need strong communication skills, since they guide and narrate the experience for guests throughout the flight.
Looking ahead, I expect helicopter tourism in Hawaii to keep growing as international travel rebounds and new markets discover the islands. Maui is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and interest in seeing it from the air only continues to build.
As traveller expectations evolve, we’ll keep focusing on what matters most to guests: safety, comfort and a truly memorable experience. We’ll also continue investing in our people and our fleet to meet that demand.
