Dublin City Council has revealed a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI aimed at incorporating artificial intelligence to bolster tourism efforts. This collaboration is expected to pioneer several smart tourism projects, setting a precedent for smart tourism innovation throughout Europe.
Among the pivotal projects is the joint development of an AI-powered itinerary planner, aptly named ‘A Day in Dublin’. This initiative, resulting from the cooperation between Dublin City Council, OpenAI, and the Dublin-based Data & Design, seeks to utilize ChatGPT-4’s sophisticated capabilities to provide personalized travel recommendations. This project is heralded as a sophisticated alternative to the conventional tourist guides, offering tailored insights into Dublin’s cultural and urban offerings.

Additionally, a practical workshop targeting smart tourism leaders from across the European Union is scheduled to be hosted in Dublin this coming September. The workshop aims to explore the application of AI in various facets of the tourism industry, including promoting cities, branding destinations, engaging tourists, and planning itineraries.
This venture is particularly timely as Dublin has recently been honored as the European Capital of Smart Tourism for 2024. Out of 30 contenders from 17 countries, Dublin stood out to the judges for its exemplary integration of smart tourism practices and the establishment of a five-year tourism strategy.

A primary goal of this tourism strategy, spanning from 2023 to 2028, is to foster innovation within Ireland’s tourism sector. The strategy outlines several measures to support this aim, notably through backing the city’s smart tourism programs.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste, expressed enthusiasm over the collaboration with OpenAI and the anticipated AI and tourism workshop. Similarly, Anna Makanju, VP of global affairs at OpenAI, shared the anticipation for developing innovative solutions that will mutually benefit visitors and urban areas.
Tourism continues to be a crucial component of Ireland’s economy, with overseas tourist spending reported at €5.3 billion in 2023 by the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating cutting-edge technology into the tourism sector, following the early 2023 announcement of Dublin City Council’s ‘Door into the Docklands’ augmented reality app, promising a more engaging and intelligent tourism experience in Dublin and potentially setting a new benchmark for smart tourism globally.
