The Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) has launched an extensive and sophisticated market research programme which is to run for 18 months. This flagship initiative is being launched across 10 core European source markets, with the central purpose of tracking closely the changing preferences, travel behaviours and demand shifts for Greek holidays. The programme officially launched in early June 2026 and was built to replace anecdotal evidence with hard empirical data. Having moved away from the ad hoc and one-off consumer snapshots, the GNTO is now adopting a longitudinal approach so that the Greek tourism brand stays agile and highly responsive to the rapid changes that are now redefining the international travel landscape.

The scope of the research is very wide geographically: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Sweden and Romania. The reason why these countries were selected is that they are the basis of the incoming tourism of Greece. The GNTO’s goal is to offer a more transparent and predictable future for the country’s tourism industry by adopting a unified and long-term perspective on these markets, which continues to be a cornerstone of the Greek economy.

Methodological Rigor: The Three-Cycle Approach

The architecture of this study is built upon three successive measurement cycles. This design was specifically chosen to allow for the observation of “trends in motion”. Rather than viewing the traveller’s psyche as a static entity, the research is focused on how intentions evolve in response to external economic conditions, seasonal pressures, and shifting global perspectives on travel.

During these measurement cycles, a wide array of data points is being harvested to provide a holistic view of the potential visitor:

Strategic Partnerships for Data Reliability

The complexity of this task is being managed in partnership with MINDHAUS, a premier tourism marketing strategy firm and a specialized member of the V+O Group | SEC Newgate. By leveraging external expertise, the GNTO has ensured that the research is governed by international best practices in travel-sector analysis. This collaboration is considered essential, as the tourism industry operates in an environment where travel behaviours are impacted by everything from geopolitical shifts to technological advancements in booking platforms.

Through this partnership, the data collected is being synthesized into actionable intelligence. The role of MINDHAUS is to ensure that the findings are not merely observational but are converted into strategic recommendations. The reliance on this level of professional scrutiny ensures that the organizational planning of the GNTO is grounded in, and validated by, contemporary European sentiment.

Adapting to the Dynamics of Key Markets

One of the central tenets of this initiative is the recognition that every European market possesses unique characteristics. A traveller in Sweden does not necessarily prioritize the same factors as a traveller in Romania. Consequently, the research is being tailored to extract market-specific insights. By segmenting the data, the GNTO is developing a “customized promotional capability”. This means that marketing campaigns can be more precisely targeted, with messaging that resonates with the specific cultural and economic drivers of each of the 10 source countries.

This strategic pivot is intended to move the Greek tourism sector toward a more proactive stance. Instead of launching blanket campaigns that may or may not hit their mark, future efforts will be informed by direct evidence gathered from potential visitors. This adaptive capacity is expected to increase the return on investment for tourism promotion, as advertising budgets will be directed toward audiences and channels that have been proven to hold high intent.

Preparing for the Future: A Vision Through 2027

The milestones will be implemented one after the other until the end of 2027 as the project progresses. This is a long time period, which enables capturing effects of at least two full summer seasons and several shoulder seasons. The abundance of data will also be used as a long-term roadmap for the GNTO to establish sustainable growth targets based on actual demand patterns in the field.

The initiative is also seen as a key step in the broader effort to future-proof the Greek tourism product. The GNTO is raising the bar for other national tourism boards through its use of increased data transparency and scientific rigour. The information obtained is not only for the use of government authorities but is also expected to benefit stakeholders across the hospitality and travel industry, including hoteliers, tour operators, and local service providers who rely on accurate demand forecasting to run their businesses efficiently.

This comprehensive 18-month programme is ultimately designed to keep Greece a top-of-mind destination for millions of Europeans. “Greece’s National Tourism Organisation is demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence, innovation and strategic foresight in a competitive global market by staying closely in tune with the shifting pulse of the traveller.
